  • In His Steps

    Charles M. Sheldon

Paperback (Kincaid Books, Sept. 27, 2013)
In His Steps was the most successful novel of the Social Gospel genre and is the book that first posed the question "What would Jesus do?" The book sold in the millions and caused controversy in Christian religious circles. The popularity combined with the controversy made "What would Jesus do?" a permanent part of the American experience towards the end of the nineteenth century. In His Steps follows the members of the First Church as they take the pledge to always ask "What would Jesus do?" before taking action in their daily lives, without regard to what it might do to their personal situation in society. The results are as controversial and thought provoking today as they were when Charles M. Sheldon first read the book to his Sunday evening services of the Central Congregational Church of Topeka Kansas over one hundred years ago. The Kincaid Books edition has been newly typeset and carefully compared to an original copy printed in 1899 by Henry Altemus. The result is a text that is clear and free from both the multiple OCR errors often found in newly typeset editions and the visual distortions often seen in facsimile editions.

Though variations of the subtitle "What would Jesus do" have been used by Christians for centuries as a form of imitatio dei, the imitation of God, it gained much greater currency following publication of the book. Thus lower prices and multiple publishers led to larger sales.

  • In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?

    Charles M. Sheldon

Paperback (Martino Fine Books, Sept. 22, 2010)
2010 Reprint of 1899 Edition. First published in 1896, the fictional book has sold more than 30,000,000 copies, and ranks as the 39th best-selling book of all time. In 1896 Sheldon developed a sermon story that he read as a weekly series from the pulpit of his church in Topeka, Kansas. The unifying theme of these sermons was based on posing the question, "what would Jesus do?" when facing moral decisions. The theme of the sermons was later fictionalized into the novel In His Steps. The central ethos of the novel was not about personal redemption but about moral choices related to encountering circumstances of poverty and deprivation. Sheldon's own parish work became identified with the Social Gospel, an expression of early Liberal Christianity.
  • In His Steps

    Charles Monroe Sheldon

    Paperback (Tate, May 31, 2013)
The source of the popular slogan "What Would Jesus Do?" - found everywhere today from key chains to the pages of Rolling Stone magazine - can be traced back to the 1896 publication of In His Steps. Soon after its publication In His Steps was popping up everywhere - from comic books to plays - and had a circulation greater than any book other than the Bible. Sheldon presents "a Christ for the common people. A Christ who belongs to the rich and poor, the ignorant and learned, the old and young, the good and the bad." He asks us to consider what Jesus would do if He were in our shoes. This profound book urges readers in the direction of Jesus' words, "take up your cross and follow Me." Relevant to readers today, it asks us to set our eyes on God instead of being led astray. Chose the path Jesus would have chosen. Live the life He lived. Walk in His steps.
