  • The House Beautiful: A Book Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

William C. Gannett, Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Kruty

    Hardcover (Pomegranate, Sept. 15, 2006)
The House Beautiful reproduces - in its entirety- a book designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and hand-printed at the tiny Auvergne Press in 1897, where only 90 copies of this exquisite artisan book were produced. Wright's intricate drawings surround an essay by William Gannett reflecting on the importance of tasteful design for a harmonious home, and further, how a harmonious home augments spiritual, intellectual, societal, and corporeal health. This beautifully reproduced edition contains an essay by architectural historian Paul Kruty placing Wright's book in the context of the Arts and Crafts movement in America.
  • Why We Have Day and Night

    Peter F. Neumeyer, Edward Gorey

    Hardcover (Pomegranate, March 15, 2011)
It's all dark! What happened to the light? Why is everything black?Do you know?In this curious tale, four children, accompanied by their faithful cat, stumble around in the dark and ask, “What's going on when the lights go out?” A lot of imagination and a little bit of science (cue a flashlight and an orange) inspire a creative conclusion. To these young minds, why we have day and night is a big question that can only be answered by one (very hungry) little bug.

  • The Sopping Thursday

    Edward Gorey

    Hardcover (Pomegranate, March 1, 2008)
An umbrella is missing. A man is distressed. A thief scampers over rooftops. A child is in danger. A Harangued salesclerk weeks. A dog saves the day. The intriguing story of The Sopping Thursday is unlike any other Edward Gorey book, both because of its unique gray-and black illustrations and because it has a happy ending (if one is to dismiss any worry about the child featured inthe last frame). In just thirty imags and thirty short lines of text, Gorey manages to create a complex tableau of characters and a plot worthy of film noir. Long out of print, this new edition is faithful to the size of Gorey's original drawings and wisely refrains from offering any editorial commentary...except to say this Gorey jewel is--to quote the eminent literary critic Edmund Wilson---A brilliant discovery.

  • Henri Matisse: The Barnes Foundation Coloring Books

    The Barnes Foundation, Henri Matisse

    Paperback (Pomegranate, Jan. 1, 2013)
Soft cover book with staple binding. 48 pages with 18 images to color. Size: 8½ x 11 in. Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed.Far northern France is a gray, rainy place. Nothing could be more different from the paintings made by Henri Matisse, full of sunshine, joy, and bursts of color. Still, that gray land is where Matisse was born and grew up how is that possible? Maybe the people who suffer the worst weather most appreciate and celebrate the best weather. Certainly they deserve big bouquets of the first blooms of spring. Matisse often painted flowers, and he also loved open windows, bright cloth, women dressed exotically. He did not follow the old rules about shading or careful proportions, choosing instead to make pictures by combining big areas of color. Those blues and reds and greens are shown inside the cover of this book, but you are invited to invent your own combinations when you color in the following pages.

  • Bertram and His Funny Animals

    Paul Gilbert, Minnie H. Rousseff

    Hardcover (Pomegranate, Feb. 15, 2016)
Little Bertram, he's always bringing home the most extraordinary pets, usually after asking his mamma for permission first, of course. But who ever heard of cutting holes in the ceiling for a giraffe? Running from a dangerously ticklish rhinoceros? Or dealing with a baboon for a babysitter? If only Bertram would bring home a dog or a cat or even a turtle instead, he might not find himself in such predicaments. And his mamma my, is she frazzled!Author Paul T. Gilbert, who happened to have a son just like Bertram, first imagined these pet-ownership mishaps as bedtime stories, full of laughter and mayhem and wacky good fun. Bertram and His Funny Animals became a book in 1934. Now it's back in a new edition, and this time a troublesome camel joins the original mischievous menagerie! Children will love Bertram's cackle-inducing dilemmas and the sweet drawings by Minnie Rousseff, and parents will delight in tales filled with the charming foibles of childhood.Assisting Bertram in his misadventures are his well-behaved little brother, Baby Sam, and friends Ginny Banning and George Fish. Aunt Ella and Great-Aunt Jane reliably offer their disapproval of Bertram's not-so-wild animals. Neighbor Mrs. Cree is appropriately nosy. Bertram's mamma, well, she means well. And Bertram's daddy always manages to save the day (that is, when he gets back from business in Omaha).
