  • Honor Bright

    Randall Platt

language (Andy Ross Agency, July 22, 2016)
Winner of the Keystone State Reading AwardIt’s 1944, and much of the world is at war: Fourteen-year-old Teddy is waging her own private war against the world - especially against her twin brother and her perfect, and perfectly despised, mother. When their mother dumps the twins at their grandmother’s house for the summer, Teddy faces her enemies with arrogance and a sharp anger. She’s determined not to let anyone get too close, and she spends the days on her own, exploring the beach and her grandmother’s fascinating attic. But as the summer goes on, Teddy uncovers secrets about the past, a past that has left her with badly scarred hands and has left her mother and grandmother bitterly divided. The more Teddy learns, the more she wonders how long her family can let their old resentments keep them apart, and what it will take to end her own war with them and with herself.Praise for Honor Bright“As World War II rages overseas, domestic battles keep a Washington family simmering in this vigorously told, unconventionally cast story ... A tour de force with a tough, unforgettable protagonist.” ---- Kirkus Review - Pointer“Platt’s prose is as forceful as her main character, realistically conveying the torments of true mother-daughter conflict while sustaining a plot that develops and surprises to the ending. --- Booklist

Fredy's Journey: A Frog on a Motorcycle Ride is the story of Fredy a frog who meets a motorcyclist and photographer (Bo'del) at the pond in Michigan and rides across country on Bo'del's motorcycle to go "where the birds can fly".Fredy leaves behind his friends at the pond to venture further than frogs can hop having Bo'del write notes home to his friends at the pond. Sending photo's and travel stories from 11 states. Fredy travels from Michigan through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona being photographed, meeting humans, hearing of scary animals (rattlesnakes are bad) and meeting nice animals as well.Fredy's needs are simple, seeing new places, lots of water to play in and bugs to eat. Each state offers something different.35 pages illustrated with 46 full color photographs and a map of Fredy's route, Fredy's Journey is an entertaining travelogue for parents to read to preschool age children or for beginning readers.Fredy's Journey Pg. 14 Mississippi letter home:Last night we stopped in Hattiesburg Mississippi because Bo'del saw a sign that said motel and laundromat. I think it's silly these humans want to clean clothes all the time. We were supposed to ride to the Gulf of Mexico tonight. He was tired, so was I, so I guess it's okay.In the morning LOOK AT MY PICTURE! We made it to the Gulf of Mexico! This is my ultimate portrait, proof that I can go where the birds fly. There are lots of Seagulls like the ones that visit the pond, and Pelicans. They are VERY scary looking but Bo'del says they eat fish and probably have never seen a frog before. I think I'll stay close to Bo'del. Pelicans don't seem to like him. This is part of the Atlantic Ocean and nobody, not even the birds can see across it. It's even bigger than Lake Michigan! The water tastes terrible, really salty. I hope we find some pond water when we get to Louisiana.Fredy (and Bo'del)
  • Chandlefort: In the Shadow of the Bear

    David Randall

eBook (West 26th street Press, June 22, 2012)
It has been just months since Clovermead Wickward discovered that she is really Demoiselle Cerelune Cindertallow — daughter of Lady Melisande Cindertallow, the sovereign of Chandlefort — and that the man she had called Father all her life was actually an embittered servant who stole her away when she was a baby. Since then, she has learned that she doesn't wholly care for life inside the walls of Chandlefort, and that she doesn't much like her mother's expectations for how a Demoiselle should behave — especially the bit about not changing shape anymore. When you can turn into a bear, being forced to stay human can be deadly dull. Now Clovermead must confront dangerous secrets from her family's troubled past when a mysterious stranger appears in Chandlefort. Perhaps he is the old friend of Clovermead's real father, as he claims to be — or perhaps an old enemy of the Cindertallows who seeks a final revenge. When Clovermead unintentionally puts her mother's life in mortal peril, her only chance to make amends and save the mother she has just begun to know is to set off on a dangerous journey to a distant abbey. The life of her mother, the salvation of Chandlefort, and the freedom of the bears enslaved by the overwhelming power of Lord Ursus all depend on Clovermead.
