  • Three Lives Stories of the Good, Anna, Melanctha and the Gentle Lena

    Gertrude Stein

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Aug. 17, 2012)
Bridgepoint learned to dread the sound of Miss Mathilda ,for with that name the good Anna always conquered. The strictest of the one price stores found that they could give things for a little less, when the good Anna had fully said that Miss Mathilda could not pay so much and that she could buy it cheaper by Lindheims. Lindheims was Anna sfavorite store, for there they had bargain days, when flour and sugar were sold for a quarter of a cent less for a pound, and there the heads of the departments were all her friends and always managed to give her the bargain prices, even on other days. Anna led an arduous and troubled life. Anna managed the whole little house for Miss Mathilda. It was a funny little house, one of a whole row of all the same kind that made a close pile like a row of dominoes that a child knocks over, for they were built along a street which at this point came down a steep hill. They were funny little houses, two stories high, with red brick fronts and long white steps. This one little house was always very full with Miss Mathilda, an under servant, stray dogs and cats and Anna svoice that scolded, managed, grumbled all day long.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. • Arabella and Araminta

    Gertrude Smith

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 10, 2017)
Excerpt from Arabella and AramintaInterest is the magic key to success. Enthusiastic interest in any subject will eventually lead one to become, in a greater or less degree, master of that subject. This is as true in the world of arts and letters as in the business world. It is as true with the primary pupil as with the would-be scientist.Since educators have discovered the pedagogical value of this truth, they have turned their attention more carefully to the form and manner of presenting to children the rudimentary facts of formulas of education. They no longer believe that any book, with a vocabulary sufficiently simple, is good enough for the little children, and that the really interesting stories should be held for them to read later, after fluency has rewarded their hard and perhaps unhappy efforts. The watch word now is "nothing is too good for the children."We do not mean by this, however, that we should try to make life always smooth and easy for them. But we should make it interesting, for interest means impetus, and a constant and strong impetus in the right direction means high achievement.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Tender Buttons Illustrated

    Gertrude Stein

    language (, Sept. 30, 2019)
"Tender Buttons is a 1914 book by American writer Gertrude Stein consisting of three sections titled ""Objects"", ""Food"", and ""Rooms"". While the short book consists of multiple poems covering the everyday mundane, Stein's experimental use of language renders the poems unorthodox and their subjects unfamiliar.Stein began composition of the book in 1912 with multiple short prose poems in an effort to ""create a word relationship between the word and the things seen"" using a ""realist"" perspective. She then published it in three sections as her second book in 1914"
