    Jules Verne

    eBook (E-BOOKARAMA, Nov. 30, 2018)
In "20,000 Leagues under the Sea", Verne created a character, Captain Nemo, who would continue to haunt the imagination of generations to come in the manner of Homer’s hero, from whom Nemo took his name. In the "Odyssey" (c. 725 b.c.e.; English translation, 1614), Ulysses calls himself Nemo, or “No one,” in order to hide his identity from the Cyclops. Verne’s unknown renegade, making war on injustice, has likewise become a myth. The best known of Verne’s works was also the one that took the longest to find its way into print. It is certain that the author was working on a story tentatively titled “Voyage Under the Waters” in 1865. After his exploration of the air in "Five Weeks in a Balloon" and his "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", it was logical that Verne would pursue his pedagogical mission by exploring the bottom of the sea.The novel focuses on a group of scientists embarking on a dangerous voyage in a submarine piloted by the eccentric Captain Nemo in search of a giant monster. As the journey wears on, the crew encounters dangerous life forms, but the biggest threat to their safety may be their increasingly mad captain...Considered one of the greatest science-fiction novels ever written, "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" explores themes of culture, class, grief, and the preservation of the environment. It is considered one of the forerunners of the ecology movement and displays a great respect for the life of the sea.

What follows is a gripping tale of excitement as the companions try to solve Nemo’s deepest secrets. In 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The description of Nemo’s ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. In Journey to the Center of the Earth, readers were brought face to face with prehistoric creatures deep within the bowels of the Earth. In Around the World in 80 Days, Jules Verne helped make the world seem a little smaller, and accessible to young adventurers, spurring many to attempt a voyage around the world. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

  • Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

    Jules Verne, D. Fog

eBook (Green Booker Publication, Jan. 7, 2016)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (French: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers: Tour du monde sous-marin, literally Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas: An Underwater Tour of the World) is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. The novel was originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's periodical, the Magasin d’Éducation et de RĂ©crĂ©ation. The deluxe illustrated edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou.[1] The book was highly acclaimed when released and still is now; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The description of Nemo's ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Thus, the book has been able to age well because of its scientific theories, unlike some of Verne's other works, like Journey to the Center of the Earth, which are not scientifically accurate and serve more simply as adventure novels.
