    Margaret Sidney

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 24, 2017)
"Full of incident, full of fun, and none the less full of sound, practical, moral and religious teaching." -Congregationalist "Margaret Sidney stands side by side with Louisa Alcott, in fresh, unstilted style, in refined sensibility, and in pure and wholesome depiction of home life among children." -Journal of Education "This is a story of five little American children, who are left with their widowed mother in very straitened circumstances. In describing the sunshine of their home life, the writer teaches a lesson in a pleasant way to the small inmates of wealthier homes. Polly and Phronsie are charming characters, and show that the author both knows and loves children." -The Academy and Literature "She writes from an experience in which wisdom and sympathy have been felicitously blended." -Saturday Evening Gazette "It is seldom one finds so much simplicity and naturalness combined with so much interest in a child's story." -Chicago Times "We may remark as evidence of the extraordinary popularity of this series that nearly half a million copies of this particular volume have been sold, while its successors, nearly a dozen in number, have had almost equal popularity." -New Outlook "Children cannot fail to be interested in books which relate - story fashion - events that might just as well have really happened, and the Five Little Peppers have lots of fun and plenty of events in their lives, and are real, human children after all." -The American Bookseller "One of the most successful juvenile books of the past five years." -The American: A National Journal "A book which has been popular with young people for years." -The Bookman CONTENTS: A Home View Making Happiness for Mamsie Mamsie's Birthday Trouble for the Little Brown House More Trouble Hard Days for Polly The Cloud Over the Little Brown House Joel's Turn Sunshine Again A Threatened Blow Safe New Friends Phronsie Pays a Debt of Gratitude A Letter to Jasper Jolly Days Getting a Christmas for the Little Ones Christmas Bells! Audio CD (St. Clare Audio, March 15, 2016)
6 Audio CD's - 6 Hours and 57 Minutes. The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew tells the story the Pepper family, Mamsie (the widowed mother), and children Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie as they live, learn, and play in their "little brown house". They are poor, and Mamsie and the children must work constantly to keep the wolf from the door but they do it with gaiety and spirit in abundance. The Peppers make due with whatever they have and the elder children try to make things special for the younger. Though tragedies often befall them, they bear it as best they are able and make the most of the good in life. Our CDs are packaged in premium DVD cases with CD labeling printed right on the CD in full color. We do not use paper stick-on labels, these tend to peel off over time and can really jam up car CD players and computers. We chose to use DVD cases for our CD sets, as we have found they hold up better in shipping and in regular usage than the typical CD jewel case. Please note: All recordings we offer on CD are produced with recordings from Librivox, public domain works recorded by volunteers. We at St. Clare Audio would like to thank the volunteers for their gift of offering their work to the public domain. St. Clare Audio's niche is providing them in ready-to-purchase CD sets, for those who cannot download, or have not the desire or time to do so, as well as the benefit of a nice case and professionally produced CDs. Five Little Peppers and How They Grew Audiobook is read by Rachel Ellen.

    Margaret Sidney

    Hardcover (1st World Publishing, Oct. 1, 2008)
The little old kitchen had quieted down from the bustle and confusion of mid-day; and now, with its afternoon manners on, presented a holiday aspect, that as the principal room in the brown house, it was eminently proper it should have. It was just on the edge of the twilight; and the little Peppers, all except Ben, the oldest of the flock, were enjoying a "breathing spell," as their mother called it, which meant some quiet work suitable for the hour. All the "breathing spell" they could remember however, poor things; for times were always hard with them nowadays; and since the father died, when Phronsie was a baby, Mrs. Pepper had had hard work to scrape together money enough to put bread into her children's mouths, and to pay the rent of the little brown house.
