GENTLE BEN by Walt Morey, Illustrated by John Schoenherr, E.P. Dutton 1965 First Edition, Fifth Printing. It has been truly loved. I Enjoyed this story immensely. It brought back many fond childhood memories. Mark Anderson's only Friend was Ben, the Alaskan Brown Bear that Fog Benson kept chained in the dark rickety shed on Mark's route between home and school. Mark shared his leftover sandwiches with the big bear and sometimes even unchained him so they could sit together and enjoy the bright sunshine. What a GREAT Story!

The Alaskan wilderness is a lonely place for Mark Andersen, especially after the death of his brother. But Mark finds a friend named Ben, who happens to be an Alaskan brown bear. Ben and Mark form a special bond, but the townspeople are determined to destroy it. It is only through the strength of an enduring friendship that Ben—and Mark—have a chance of being saved.
