When a man named Black decides he hates the letter "O," he deletes (not omits) all the "O" words from his life. For example, he prefers rubies and emeralds to opals and moonstones, and he has no use for owls or oaks. Black encourages everyone to follow his lead, alter their interests, and change their language. So the locksmith becomes "lcksmith" and the bootmaker is "btmaker," and people begin to whisper like conspirators when they speak certain names. Soon parents are reading rhymes to their children saying, "the cw jumped ver the mn," and "the dish ran away with the spn." But the villagers, not entirely convinced of Black's prejudice, decide that 4 "O" words should not be lost - hope, love, valor - and the fourth most important word is the whole point of The Wonderful O.
