    language (Browzer, Aug. 20, 2012)
A state of drought now grips more than half of the Continental United States. Some areas are seriously considering recycling their waste water. It is only natural that your children are already deeply concerned about the quality of their water - or they are growing uneasy about the drought. Modern children need to know more about water, drought and nature and they learn a subject best when it is introduced with small doses of humor. When they can laugh and enter a dialogue with you, learning intriguing facts about water will proceed faster than a racing motor boat. Water, Water is 3 short reports that will help you reveal a veritable host of information about water -- and drought -- in short, punchy tidbits, with a field full of examples children will understand and you will appreciate. Comparisons will illustrate the vital importance of this natural resource that man cannot live without. As you read along you'll be prompted with many questions to make sure this information is fully understood. Add a few chunks of humor from your own experience to make this subject really sink in and be an event they will remember for a lifetime.Water, Water comes in 3 sections. Smaller children will be intrigued with the story of Elijah the prophet pitted against Ahab, the Mighty -- frustrated -- King of Israel. The pictures will set their interest bubbling, and you will remember most of the facts exposed in this section. The next section is for the older child, the ones ready to face and embrace the problems of drought, scarcity, and peril so important to the earth we depend on for life and comfort. There will be facts in this section that may even send you to fetch the encyclopedia. Here we explore the inexhaustible uses of water and point out some possibilities for pondering, and perhaps further investigation. The third section is to be used only with adult supervision. Here the subject presented is survival --when water turns dangerous, in an ice storm. It shows how to prepare for that time or event when just a little bit of preparation can turn a dangerous ice storm into an opportunity to be of service to your family, friends and community. It explains what you will need and how to use it. You will also see what is happening outside, the race of the power company to remove hazards and restore life-giving warmth and power to the community. The author, Lin Stone began practicing survival skills even before he learned there were other people in the world besides the 5 he knew of. Until he was 17 into the Arizona desert Lin would plunge with no water, no extra clothing, no hat, and no companions. There he would live by his wits, usually for only a single day, or perhaps a week, but occasionally he remained out, alone, for periods as long as one month. At the age of 17 he spent an entire winter in Korea WITH equipment AND companions, and it was terribly cold that year.. At the age of 20 he spent an entire winter in northern Germany, again WITH equipment AND companions. Germany was far easier, he says.Taking up family responsibilities, he raised three boys and six girls, all of whom can now survive virtually anywhere.Lin Stone has self-published 33 books, all of which are still selling, from his web site. His first conventionally published book was HOW TO BUY LAND AT TAX SALES.. Unfortunately, after 13 years it is hopelessly outdated. All 32 other books will also be released as Kindle editions. In his opinion the Kindle is the greatest publishing opportunity this world has ever known. The next four fascinating subjects are strawberries, Grab a Hare By The Head, Little Bullies and Big Problems, and Chickens Are Cute Little Carnivores.

    Bapsi Sidhwa

Hardcover (Penguin Books, Oct. 30, 2006)
The renowned author Bapsi Sidhwa and the equally renowned filmmaker Deepa Mehta share a unique artistic relationship: Mehta adapted Sidhwa’s novel Cracking India for her brilliant film Earth, and here, Sidhwa adapts Mehta’s controversial film Water to the printed page.Set in 1938, against the backdrop of Gandhi’s rise to power, Water follows the life of eight-year-old Chuyia, abandoned at a widow’s ashram after the death of her elderly husband. There, she must live in penitence until her death. Unwilling to accept her fate, she becomes a catalyst for change in the widows’s lives. When her friend Kalyani, a beautiful widow-prostitute, falls in love with a young, upper-class Gandhian idealist, the forbidden affair boldly defies Hindu tradition and threatens to undermine the ashram’s delicate balance of power. This riveting look at the lives of widows in colonial India is ultimately a haunting and lyrical story of love, faith, and redemption.
