    Paperback (Scholastic, March 15, 2007)
Kindergarten-Grade 2-These titles will enhance community-helper units. Each one starts off with a "Word Hunt" that uses photographs and a phonetic pronunciation guide to give children an instant snapshot of the profession. Next, readers are led through a day in the life of the workers through a page of large font, descriptive text opposite a full-page photograph showing the people at work. Additional photographs and text provide behind-the-scenes looks at each profession. Readers see the kitchen where firefighters prepare and eat their meals as a family and the barracks where they sleep, a library storyhour, and the full-scale kitchen used to prepare nutritious meals for zoo animals. The recommended Web sites offer many educational games and activities that correlate to fire prevention, the zoo, and the library. The cover indicates the guided reading level, word count, decodability percentage, and sight-word count of each title. These creative, well-thought-out books provide comprehensive perspectives on community workers and how what they do impacts those they serve.

  • What Do Police Officers Do

    Ryan Ehalt, Jonathan Farrell

    language (, March 9, 2019)
This book was written by a currently serving police officer in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. His inspiration for the story came from the numerous positive encounters he has had with children and their parents during his 15 year career in law enforcement. It tells the story of two police officers meeting a little girl and her daddy in a coffee shop. The theme of crime and consequences is presented, avoiding the traditional idea of 'good guys' versus 'bad guys' and instead replacing it with the concept of 'nice things' versus 'not nice things." The book shows police officers as being approachable and more than willing to help people, not only in their roles as police officers, but also as community members who consistently go above and beyond to serve. The author hopes that law enforcement members who read this book to their kids can relate to the story. Each one will have their own positive police encounter stories that if they written into books would fill libraries.
