  • HENRY V

    William Shakespeare

    eBook (, April 25, 2018)
Henry V is a history play by William Shakespeare, believed to be written in 1599. It is based on the life of King Henry V of England, and focuses on events immediately before and after the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years' War. The play is the final part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II, Henry IV, part 1 and Henry IV, part 2. The original audiences would thus have already been familiar with the title character, who was depicted in the Henry IV plays as a wild, undisciplined lad known as "Prince Hal." In Henry V, the young prince has become a mature man and embarks on an attempted conquest of France.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564, and his birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23. The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. He was one of eight children born to John Shakespeare, a merchant of some standing in his community. William probably went to the King’s New School in Stratford, but he had no university education. In November 1582, at the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior, who was pregnant with their first child, Susanna. She was born on May 26, 1583. Twins, a boy, Hamnet ( who would die at age eleven), and a girl, Judith, were born in 1585. By 1592 Shakespeare had gone to London working as an actor and already known as a playwright. A rival dramatist, Robert Greene, referred to him as “an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers.” Shakespeare became a principal shareholder and playwright of the successful acting troupe, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (later under James I, called the King’s Men). In 1599 the Lord Chamberlain’s Men built and occupied the Globe Theater in Southwark near the Thames River. Here many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed by the most famous actors of his time, including Richard Burbage, Will Kempe, and Robert Armin. In addition to his 37 plays, Shakespeare had a hand in others, including Sir Thomas More and The Two Noble Kinsmen, and he wrote poems, including Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. His 154 sonnets were published, probably without his authorization, in 1609. In 1611 or 1612 he gave up his lodgings in London and devoted more and more time to retirement in Stratford, though he continued writing such plays as The Tempest and Henry VII until about 1613. He died on April 23 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford. No collected edition of his plays was published during his life-time, but in 1623 two members of his acting company, John Heminges and Henry Condell, put together the great collection now called the First Folio.

    Hardcover (Atheneum, Jan. 1, 1967)
From dust jacket: "Henry 3 didn't want it known, the percent he was. But Fletcher Larkin knew. He'd heard Dokstra mention it - 154%. Practically a natural born genius....So that was it. Somebody always found out. And that was the end. In a way it had never mattered, how much they'd moved around because of his dad's job; he'd never had any friends to miss anyway. But this time he had wanted it to be different because they might stay in Crestview. That is if the whole family pitched in and did right, and his father really got to be vice-president....Henry was wrong. They didn't find out. Fletch, who everybody hated anyway, had not told. And for once he did have some friends. The family did right too, made the right impressions on the right people. And Pa did get to be vice-president....It was only after, Herny found his family had been sold a bill of goods - that what they'd worked for, he and his family, weren't important when you came right down to it. That's when Fletcher Larkin was important, and percent didn't matter at all..".

King Henry V has put aside the indiscretion of youth and taken the throne upon his father's death. Faced with insurrection and a war with France, Henry must become a strong king or perish. “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility: But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Let pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it”

    William Shakespeare

Paperback (Penguin Books, June 25, 2015)
Among the most well-loved of William Shakespeare's history plays, Henry V is the gripping conclusion to the story of young 'Prince Hal' begun in Henry IV, edited by A.R. Humphreys with an introduction by Ann Kaegi. 'We few, we happy few, we band of brothers For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother' Young King Henry wages war on France. But, tainted by his father's crimes, and with enemies among his own men, he must confront the difficult responsibilities of kingship. In rousing speeches, first at the siege of Harfleur where he urges his men 'Once more into the breach', and again on St Crispin's Day before the Battle of Agincourt, Henry rallies the English troops to spectacular victories which change the course of history. But even with the battles won, the war is not yet over - for to make safe his success, Henry must secure a marriage with the French princess, Catherine of Valois. And can triumph in France prevent civil war in England? This book includes a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and the Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Henry V, a chronology of his works, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love-poetry in English.
