  • Biggest and Smallest

    Camilla Bedoyere

Paperback (Firefly Books, Dec. 23, 2010)
A new series of colorful and lighthearted books that compares opposites in the weird and wonderful animal kingdom. Children are often intrigued by extremes in the world around them and how they compare to each other -- the biggest and the smallest, the fastest and the slowest, the smartest and the silliest. These books describe and illustrate animals' characteristics and compare them to animals with exactly the opposite characteristics. Young readers will learn fascinating facts about dozens of creatures from around the world while having some serious fun. All of the books include practical notes for parents and teachers about learning activities and games. The enormous and tiny animals in Biggest and Smallest come from all continents and some lived long ago. The sauroposeifon reached 40 feet but had a tiny head. Foraminifera jellyfish, too tiny to be seen without a microscope, lived on Earth 500 million years ago. The stinkpot turtle is just 2 inches long, but the venomous goliath bird-eating spider is the size of a dinner plate -- that's 12 inches! There are other extremes in Biggest and Smallest, too, such as the loudest land animal, the howler monkey, and the scariest reptile, the reticulated python.

All of the books include practical notes for parents and teachers about learning activities and games. Fastest and Slowest is alive with action photographs of the world's fastest animals . . . and the slowest. It's well known that, when it comes to speed, the cheetah rules the African plains. But lesser known is that, size for size, a human would have to run 2,500 miles per hour to keep up with the tiny golden-rumped elephant shrew! Other record-breakers include the bootlace worm, which at 180 feet is the longest of its kind, and the potoo bird, which mimics tree branches and spends its days perched in a tree and not moving -- at all -- until after dark. Now that's slow.

Smartest and Silliest features photographs of animals with detailed captions that describe how smart or silly they really are. Some are engaged in activities, and others demonstrate how size affects any number of things -- survival, play, appearance and more. Included are sheep that can recognize the faces of as many as 50 other sheep, sponges without brains, purple flatworms that can find their way through mazes (and remember the fastest route) and apes that can saw wood, hammer nails and wash clothes with soap.

  • Strongest and Weakest

    Camilla Bedoyere

Paperback (Firefly Books, Dec. 23, 2010)

Children are often intrigued by extremes in the world around them and how they compare to each other -- the biggest and the smallest, the fastest and the slowest, the smartest and the silliest. Young readers will learn fascinating facts about dozens of creatures from around the world while having some serious fun. All of the books include practical notes for parents and teachers about learning activities and games. Strongest and Weakest shows how animals can be strong in different ways and how other animals have adapted to their weaknesses in order to survive. The coconut crab, which can open a coconut with its giant claws, is certainly strong. A lone piranha may not be strong, but in greater numbers they are the most ferocious of freshwater fish and can devour a large mammal in short order. And larvae of the periodical cicada are soft-bodied and lack any defenses, so they stay underground for about 17 years while they grow.
