  • The Man in the Mango Tree

    Christopher Walker

    eBook (Lulu, July 13, 2013)
A young man lives hidden in the depths of a great mango tree somewhere in Africa. Learn about his daily life, his friends - the lizards and the birds - and the village that lies close by. And then witness as the man in the mango tree must work valiantly and with every ounce of bravery in his heart to save his home from destruction..."The Man in the Mango Tree" includes illustrations by Jonathan Quinn which complement the text at key points in the story. The book is great for younger readers who feel independent enough to approach a book by themselves, and also for parents to read to or with their children. As an English language teacher the writer understands the problems that foreign speakers face when learning a language, and this book has also been written with students in mind. "The Man in the Mango Tree" contains a variety of language, but nothing that should prove problematic for language learners at B1 level or above; the themes it explores can be used for further discussion in the classroom.

  • On the High Seas

    Ken Medernach

    eBook (Lulu, Sept. 16, 2007)
A swashbuckling seaman and adventurer, tells some of his true life tales. 'On the High Seas' is a collection of short stories based on true life experiences of Ken Medernach, involving the author’s life on the water. On the High Seas was written to inspire young people to seek their dreams, but only after they have adequately prepared themselves for the task. --The first story in the book illustrates that careful preparation and training help and is critical to the successful accomplishment of one’s goals. --The second tale illustrates that even though the participants were well trained, the lack of adequate preparation brought them in close proximity with calamity. --In the final episode two men embrace haphazard and “devil-may-care” attitudes which, without their prior experiences, could have had much more serious consequences. The book has many illustrations, maps, a glossary of nautical terms and much more. The ideal book for anyone interested in adventures on the water.

This is how we were. Not who we are now. Things have changed. Everything has changed. My name was Olive Channing. I was seventeen years old. I lived on Malbrook Manor. I was one of those popular girls in school. I wore the best clothes, hung out with the right people, and went to all the good parties. I was the homecoming princess for my class, and my biggest goal in life was to be prom queen as both my sisters had. My best friends, Ella and Steph, were a lot like me. Rich, pretty, popular. I’m not sure we ever really liked each other. We just liked being seen with each other. But that was all that mattered. I thought I was happy at the time. I thought I had the best friends in world. Maybe I would have realized I was wrong on my own, without help, but I’m not sure I would have. I thought my life was perfect. His name was Seth Meridale. He had blonde curly hair and brown eyes and a small scar across his nose. Some boys that used to pick on him, broke his glasses once. They cut his nose. He wore old t-shirts and jeans, and glasses. He was very smart. He liked to read and play video games. He didn’t go outside much so we hardly ever saw each other except at school. He was an only child. He lived with his parents. Both of his parents were teachers. His father taught English in middle school, and his mother taught first grade. He had lived down the street from me since we were children. We didn’t play together when we were children. I played with the children of my parents’ friends. I don’t think I even knew his name until we started school. We were never friends. My friends didn’t like him, neither did I. We called him nerd and geek and other names. Once we even made him cry. I don’t remember exactly what we said, but I remember that it happened. Sometimes I wish I could remember, other times I’m glad that I can’t. I don’t think he liked us either. He was a nice guy. But he wasn’t a popular guy. And in my world that meant you weren’t worth spending time with. Her name was Jade Juniper. She was the daughter of my parent’s maid, Miss Jaylen. Her parents were divorced. Her father lived a few hours away. She worked a lot. She didn’t have time for friends or fun.I was never nice to her. My friends called her names when they came over. I usually joined in. I could have cleaned up after myself a little to give her some time off, but I didn’t. I didn’t feel bad for her. I never really thought about how she felt. That is how we were. Not who we are now. Things have changed. Everything has changed. This is our story. This is my story.
