BRITISH GOBLINSWelsh Folklore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and TraditionsWith following enhanced featureseasy, enjoyable and fast readsatisfactory both to children and adult readersattentive editingfluid text formattingThe Book in BriefThe British Isles, in particular Wales, are renowned for legend and folklore. The author, an American journalist working in Europe, was appointed Consul to Wales and thus began his fascination with Welsh folklore. He became a renowned authority and published several books on the subject. This work is more of a scholarly discussion on the origins and geography than a narration of the stories. - Summary by Lynne ThompsonThe Author's Short Biography:William Wirt Sikes (November 23, 1836 – August 18, 1883) was an American journalist and writer, perhaps best known today for his writings on Welsh folklore and customs.William Wirt Sikes was born in Watertown, New York, the son of William Johnson Sikes, a prominent local physician. He was the seventh of eleven children, of whom only six survived to adulthood. Sikes himself was seriously ill as a child and almost lost his hearing, so he was largely educated at home. At fourteen he went to work for a printer and learned how to set type. He supported himself thereafter by typesetting, contributing to local newspapers, and giving temperance lectures. At the age of nineteen, on August 28, 1855, he married Jeannette Annie Wilcox (1837-1889); they had two children, George Preston Sikes (1856-1957) and Clara Jeanette Sikes (1858-1956).In 1856 he was working at the Utica Morning Herald as a typesetter and contributor. He published a book of stories and poems, A Book for the Winter-Evening Fireside, in 1858. He spent time in Chicago working at newspapers there, and around 1860 worked on a paper called City and Country in Nyack, New York.[1] In 1862 he was given the job of canal inspector in Chicago for the state-owned Illinois and Michigan Canal. While in Chicago he was separated from his wife, by mutual consent; they divorced in 1870.Between 1865 and 1867 he went to New York City to work on newspapers there; he took a special interest in the lives of the poor there. He continued to write, publishing stories in The Youth's Companion, Oliver Optic's Magazine, and others. He published two novels, The World's Broad Stage (serialized in the Toledo Blade) and One Poor Girl (1869). Sikes gave lectures and was represented by the Boston Lyceum Bureau from 1869–71;[3] he married fellow lecturer Olive Logan on December 19, 1871.After their marriage the couple went to Europe, where they continued to practice journalism. Sikes produced a biographical and critical piece on the Wiertz Museum for Harper's Magazine in 1873 which was later reprinted by the museum. In June 1876 Sikes was appointed U.S. Consul at Cardiff, Wales. Over the next few years Sikes produced a number of pieces on Welsh folklore, mythology, and customs, collected as British Goblins; Welsh Folk-Lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends, and Traditions (1880) and Rambles and Studies in Old South Wales (1881).

  • Little Lord Fauntleroy

    Frances Hodgson Burnett, Peter Spier

Hardcover (Junior Deluxe Editions, Jan. 1, 1954)
Little Lord Fauntleroy is a novel by the English-American writer Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924), her first children's novel. It was published as a serial in St. Nicholas Magazine from November 1885 to October 1886, then as a book by Scribner's in 1886. The novel set a precedent in copyright law when Burnett won a lawsuit in 1888 against E. V. Seebohm over the rights to theatrical adaptations of the work. In a shabby New York side street in the mid-1880s, young Cedric Errol lives with his mother (known only as Mrs. Errol or "Dearest") in genteel poverty after the death of his father, Captain Cedric Errol. One day, they are visited by an English lawyer named Havisham with a message from Cedric's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, an unruly millionaire who despises America and was very disappointed when his youngest son married an American woman. With the deaths of his father's elder brothers, Cedric has now inherited the title Lord Fauntleroy and is the heir to the earldom and a vast estate. Many ups and downs follow. The Fauntleroy suit, so well-described by Burnett and realized in Reginald Birch's detailed pen-and-ink drawings, created a fad for formal dress for American middle-class children. The Junior Deluxe Editions were a mail-order based program from Doubleday in which customers signed on to receive new volumes on a monthly basis. There were about 90 titles in all, issued from the mid ’40s up to 1962. They are all beautifully illustrated. This book is illustrated by Peter Spier (b. 1927), a Dutch-born American illustrator and writer who has created more than thirty children's books.

He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today.Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.

  • Rip Van Winkle and Other Stories

    Washington Irving, Susanne Suba

Hardcover (Junior Deluxe Editions, July 6, 1955)
This is a book from the Junior Deluxe Editions series published between 1947 and 1968 mainly by Nelson Doubleday Inc. and J.P. Lippincott Co. All of the illustrations are done by different illustrators. This book, RIP VAN WINKLE AND OTHER STORIES was written by American author Washington Irving (1783-1859) and was first published in 1819. The other stories include THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, DOLPH HEYLIGER, THE LEGEND OF THE STORM SHIP, KIDD THE PIRATE, THE DEVIL AND TOM WALKER, and PHILIP OF POKANOKET. You are probably familiar with the popularized stories of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but have you read the original unabridged versions by Washington Irving? His skillfully written and colorful tales have much more meaning and depth. In Rip Van Winkle he makes a profound social comment about the changes happening in his America, and Sleepy Hollow isn't just a chilling tale about the Headless Horseman but an enchanting story about two rival suitors. This Junior Deluxe Edition book was illustrated by Susanne Suba (1913-2012) who was born in Budapest, Hungary. Her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn when she was a young girl. After studying art at Pratt Institute in New York, Ms. Suba moved to Chicago to work as a book illustrator. She collaborated with various authors, including her husband Russell McCracken, and was a regular contributor to Publisher's Weekly and other publications throughout the years. As a freelance painter and illustrator, Ms. Suba had exhibitions at The Boston Museum, the Art Director's Club in both Chicago and New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum and many other venues, most notably, many covers for the “The New Yorker” magazine.
