Rip Van Winkle and Other Stories

This is a book from the Junior Deluxe Editions series published between 1947 and 1968 mainly by Nelson Doubleday Inc. and J.P. Lippincott Co. All of the illustrations are done by different illustrators. This book, RIP VAN WINKLE AND OTHER STORIES was written by American author Washington Irving (1783-1859) and was first published in 1819. The other stories include THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, DOLPH HEYLIGER, THE LEGEND OF THE STORM SHIP, KIDD THE PIRATE, THE DEVIL AND TOM WALKER, and PHILIP OF POKANOKET. You are probably familiar with the popularized stories of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but have you read the original unabridged versions by Washington Irving? His skillfully written and colorful tales have much more meaning and depth. In Rip Van Winkle he makes a profound social comment about the changes happening in his America, and Sleepy Hollow isn't just a chilling tale about the Headless Horseman but an enchanting story about two rival suitors. This Junior Deluxe Edition book was illustrated by Susanne Suba (1913-2012) who was born in Budapest, Hungary. Her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn when she was a young girl. After studying art at Pratt Institute in New York, Ms. Suba moved to Chicago to work as a book illustrator. She collaborated with various authors, including her husband Russell McCracken, and was a regular contributor to Publisher's Weekly and other publications throughout the years. As a freelance painter and illustrator, Ms. Suba had exhibitions at The Boston Museum, the Art Director's Club in both Chicago and New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum and many other venues, most notably, many covers for the “The New Yorker” magazine.
