If you had to choose between a stable life of security under the tyranny of fear-mongers and a life of danger in the pursuit of adventure, truth and beauty, what would you do? Would you defy tyranny, even if it meant exile from the very community that raised you? This is the decision that Johnny Ellis and his sister Ellie must make. The Legend of the Burning Lake is a story of two siblings in the community of Grandin. After a series of natural disasters that destroyed most of the earth’s population, the survivors banded together to form the town of Grandin. Under the stern leadership of Mr. McCutcheon, the community lives a way of life ordered around the most basic elements of survival. Their community values are: duty, loyalty and truth-telling. The elders have a strict code of law that forbids anything that involves imagination or magic. The playgrounds have been abandoned, their stories buried in the past and violators are harshly punished. The Ellis family is a respectable, hard-working part of the community that harbors a deeply guarded secret. There is magic in their blood. When Johnny and Ellie find a mysterious lake just beyond their property, their father forbids them to go any further. But Johnny, Ellie and their friends feel that there must be more to their lives than just surviving. They feel called to mystery, adventure and heroism. When they journey out to uncover the legend of the burning lake, Johnny discovers his secret power. He is determined to keep it secret in order to avoid condemnation. As events unfold, he is forced to make a decision between protecting his secret and saving the life of the people he loves.
