  • Running the Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian

    Avi Steinberg

    Hardcover (Nan A. Talese, Oct. 19, 2010)
Avi Steinberg is stumped. After defecting from yeshiva to Harvard, he has only a senior thesis essay on Bugs Bunny to show for his effort. While his friends and classmates advance in the world, he remains stuck at a crossroads, unable to meet the lofty expectations of his Orthodox Jewish upbringing. And his romantic existence as a freelance obituary writer just isn’t cutting it. Seeking direction—and dental insurance—Steinberg takes a job as a librarian in a tough Boston prison. The prison library counter, his new post, attracts con men, minor prophets, ghosts, and an assortment of quirky regulars searching for the perfect book and a connection to the outside world. There’s an anxious pimp who solicits Steinberg’s help in writing a memoir. A passionate gangster who dreams of hosting a cooking show titled Thug Sizzle. A disgruntled officer who instigates a major feud over a Post-it note. A doomed ex-stripper who asks Steinberg to orchestrate a reunion with her estranged son, himself an inmate. Over time, Steinberg is drawn into the accidental community of outcasts that has formed among his bookshelves — a drama he recounts with heartbreak and humor. But when the struggles of the prison library — between life and death, love and loyalty — become personal, Steinberg is forced to take sides.Running the Books is a trenchant exploration of prison culture and an entertaining tale of one young man’s earnest attempt to find his place in the world while trying not to get fired in the process.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission v. Cuban

    Marc I. Steinberg

Paperback (Twelve Tables Press, April 24, 2019)
This experiential book focuses on the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) enforcement action charging Mr. Mark Cuban with illegal insider trading. Mr. Cuban is a well-respected entrepreneur, businessman and investor whose ownership interests include the National Basketball Association s (NBA) Dallas Mavericks. Mr. Cuban also is one of the principal investors on the reality television program Shark Tank. His net worth is valued in the billions of dollars. The author (Marc I. Steinberg) was retained as an expert witness in this case on Mr. Cuban's behalf. Professor Steinberg therefore had the opportunity to experience this litigation from the playing field rather than as a spectator. These insights enhance the book's substance and vitality. In captivating fashion, the book presents key documents, testimony, and insights from the start of the SEC's investigation of Mr. Cuban's trading of Mamma.com stock through the end of trial with the jury exonerating him. This saga lasting five years was at a high cost for the government and Mr. Cuban. In his successful defense, Mr. Cuban reportedly spent $12 million in legal fees in defeating the government's charge that he was a fraudster. For the SEC, after years of vigorous pursuit with less than a formidable case, it incurred a significant defeat. In the end, when Mr. Cuban emerged victorious and the government packed its bags, questions are raised as to strategic decisions made, the high costs of defending one's good name, the limits of government prosecutorial discretion, and the breadth of our insider trading laws. This book focuses on this intriguing litigation, drawing the reader's attention as the story unfolds.

Wolpe, author of Why Faith Matters and Floating Takes Faith --Rabbi Joseph TelushkinProduct DescriptionA long-lost novel by the author of As a Driven Leaf. Infidelity, faith, and power all come together in a gripping story of the prophet Hosea and his wife, Gomer. This extraordinary literary find includes a foreword by Ari Goldman and commentaries by Harold Kushner and Norma Rosen. The Lord said unto Hosea: Go, take unto thee a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry; for the land doth commit great harlotry, departing from the Lord.HOSEA 1:2From the moment young Hosea saw the maiden Gomer dancing at the Festival of Booths, he loved her. It was the most beautiful vision he had ever seen, and he would never forget it, despite the scornful laughter of his older brother Iddo, despite the lack of piety of Gomer s household, and despite her admission that she did not love him.And so Hosea marries Gomer, in a troubled land where idol-worshiping neighbors offer up their daughters purity in the sacred groves, where arrogant high priests will stop at nothing to silence troublesome prophets, and where the blood of brothers can be the strongest bond, or the most destructive. When Milton Steinberg died in 1950, he left one manuscript tantalizingly unfinished. Like As a Driven Leaf, it is grand in scope, while told as a compelling personal tale. Set against a backdrop of unrest in ancient Israel, The Prophet s Wife is a stirring portrait of the biblical prophet Hosea, his passionate and free-spirited wife Gomer, and a people seduced by the lures of power and idolatry to betray their faith.

  • Three Letter Plague: A Young Man's Journey Through a Great Epidemic

    Jonny Steinberg

Paperback (Vintage Books USA, Dec. 1, 2008)
At the end of a steep gravel road in one of the remotest corners of South Africa's Eastern Cape lies the village of Ithanga. Home to a few hundred villagers, the majority of them unemployed, it is inconceivably poor. It is to here that award-winning author Jonny Steinberg travels to explore the lives of a community caught up in a battle to survive the ravages of the greatest plague of our times, the African AIDS epidemic. He befriends Sizwe, a young local man who refuses to be tested for Aids despite the existence of a well-run testing and anti-retroviral programme. It is his deep ambivalence, rooted in his deep sense of the cultural divide, that becomes the key to understanding the dynamics that thread their way through a complex and traditional rural community. As Steinberg grapples to get closer to finding answers that remain maddeningly just out of reach, he realizes that he must look within himself to unravel certain riddles.
