About The Book and About The Author - A young white man, fresh out of college (Arizona State University), coaches a High School Boysâ Basketball team, comprised mostly of Native American Apache Indian Boys, and a few Angelo boys that wanted to learn to play the game of Basketball! This ârags to richesâ story about a young man with lots of experience playing the game of Basketball and with a burning desire to coach and teach a group of young Apache boys, and a few of their Angelo friends, to love the game as much as he did. Coach Norton took boys who could hardly dribble a ball, had never learned how to even shoot a basketball and conditioned them, taught them and demanded they try harder and loved them. It was amazing to watch the transformation of these young men during the first few years. They came from âdust to darknessâ to a type of âthunder and lightningâ basketball, their opponentâs came to know as the âApache Wild Wind Basketball teamâ that was unbeatable. The Ft. Thomas Apaches became the âhunters instead of the hunted.â Going from the backyard dirt courts, with car tires set afire and burning for lights at night, the winners of the coveted âGold Ball Trophyâ as the Arizona State Champions. This is a story that will make you laugh, cry, cheer and wish you had been sitting in the bleachers to see the âApache Wild Wind â Basketball come to life.
