  • Birchbark Brigade: A Fur Trade History

    Cris Peterson

Hardcover (Calkins Creek, Oct. 1, 2009)
A history of the North American fur trade, based on primary sources. The North American fur trade, set in motion by the discovery of the New World in the fifteenth century, was this continent's biggest business for over three hundred years. Furs harvested by Ojibwa natives in the north woods ended up on the sleeves and hems of French princesses and Chinese emperors. Felt hats on the heads of every European businessman began as beaver pelts carried in birchbark canoes to trading posts dotting the wilderness. Iron tools, woolen blankets, and calico cloth manufactured in England found their way to wigwams along the remote rivers of North America. The fur trade influenced every aspect of life—from how Europeans related to the Indians, how and where settlements were built, to how our nation formed. Drawing on primary sources, including the diaries of Ojibwa, American, and French traders of the period, this Society of School Librarians International Honor Book gives readers a glimpse of a little-known story from our past.

  • To Siberia

    Per Petterson

Paperback (Picador Paper, Sept. 1, 2009)
I was fourteen and a half when the Germans came. On that 9th April we woke to the roar of aeroplanes swooping so low over the roofs of the town that we could see the black iron crosses painted on the underside of their wings when we leaned out of the windows and looked up. In this exquisite novel, readers will find the crystalline prose and depth of feeling they adored in Out Stealing Horses, a literary sensation of 2007. A brother and sister are forced ever more closely together after the suicide of their grandfather. Their parents' neglect leaves them wandering the streets of their small Danish village. The sister dreams of escaping to Siberia, but it seems increasingly distant as she helplessly watches her brother become more and more involved in resisting the Nazis.
  • The Family of Fang and Claw

    AA Peterson

Paperback (Independently published, Oct. 9, 2017)
This book might not be for you. It would be irresponsible to write a synopsis without saying that first. That’s not a marketing ploy. It’s not a gimmick to catch your intrigue. There’s no convoluted political reasoning for the trigger warning other than genuine empathy for you as a human being. I’m saying it like a doctor trying to write a prescription for what ails you. This book will probably be like medicine for some people. It will open up new ways of thinking, help you empathize with more people, and give you better insight into your own personal demons. For others, this book will be like poison. I don’t pull punches and I wrote this book to tear the scars off your heart. Start to finish, this book is meant to knock the wind out of you. So if your heart is already bleeding, and you’re trying to catch your breath, please leave it be and come back another time. That being said... Thirteen demons of the Family have come to destroy the World. From a dimension beyond comprehension, the Family seeks to complete the Rituals of Breaking and erode the barriers between Worlds. By turning human vice into the power for their dark magics, the Family has but to set the stage and let our frailties play out for humanity to condemn itself. Hope comes only by Breaking the Names of the Family, for they are made vulnerable when they choose a Monument for their Rituals. If a human should choose virtue over vice and overcome their darkest desires, only then can the Family die. It will fall to Seth, Monument of the Full Knowing Choice of Evil, to decide the ultimate Fate of the World. Seth has to answer a single question to save the world. But will he be able to find the answer in time?
