  • The Mysterious House

    Mrs O F Walton

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, April 21, 2018)
Excerpt from The Mysterious House It had been early morning when the woman first came there, and now the day was far advanced, but still she waited on. Once she had run down a side street, and had crept into a baker's shop, and had hastily bought a bun to keep await the pangs of hunger; but in a minute's time she had been back at her post, and she had never allowed herself to lose sight of the gate again. The cathedral bells had chimed every quarter of an hour, and the bell of the great clock had struck the hours one after another; and her steps had grown slower and slower as the time went on; but, weary though she was she never thought of going away, or of ceasing to keep her watch on the great iron gate. She was a tall thin woman, with a sorrowful face and with a restless anxious eye, and on her brow were many wrinkles and marks of care, although she could not have been more than forty years of age. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
