The cathedral bells had chimed every quarter of an hour, and the bell of the great clock had struck the hours one after another; and her steps had grown slower and slower as the time went on; but, weary though she was she never thought of going away, or of ceasing to keep her watch on the great iron gate. She was a tall thin woman, with a sorrowful face and with a restless anxious eye, and on her brow were many wrinkles and marks of care, although she could not have been more than forty years of age.
