Paperback (Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency, LLC, June 28, 2017)
There's a tree that takes anger. Trevor Baker is a big, heavy, and very angry nine-year-old boy who is the neighborhood and school bully. One night after his mother takes away his television, he storms out of the house, shouting, punching, and kicking anything in his path. Unsatisfied after acting out his violence, he comes across the only force that can change him: a large old maple tree next to his house that's tall enough to touch his bedroom window on the second floor. At first, Trevor challenges the tree. Then as his anger consumes him, he punches and kicks it, inflicting minor injuries (mostly to his pride), but it calms him down.Returning to his room, Trevor continues talking to himself, but is no longer shouting that nobody likes him, until he hears a voice. It is the tree that becomes his Anger Tree. The two become good friends, though only Trevor can hear its words, so he reads to the tree and it gives him advice, telling Trevor there's a bigger world for him to explore. This inspirational story will bring out emotions in everyone, and it's a book to be read over and over again.John H. • The Komnene Dynasty: Byzantium's Struggle for Survival 1057–1185

    John Car

Hardcover (Pen and Sword History, Oct. 9, 2018)
The 128-year dynasty of the Komneni (1057 to 1185) was the last great epoch of Byzantium, when the empire had to fend off Turkish and Norman foes simultaneously. Starting with the extremely able Alexios I, and unable now to count on help from the West, the Komneni played their strategic cards very well. Though the dynasty ended in cruelty and incompetence under Andronikos I (the Terrible), it fought a valiant rear-guard action in keeping eastern Christendom alive. The Komnene dynasty saw several changes in Byzantine military practice, such as the adoption of heavy cavalry on the western model, the extensive use of foreign mercenaries and the neglect of the navy (both of which were to prove a huge and possibly fatal disadvantage). A chapter is devoted to the famous Varangian Guard, which included many Saxons in exile following the Norman conquest of England. The terrible defeat at Myriokephalon in 1176 sealed the doom of the dynasty, preparing the way for the conquest of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusaders.

Now that the siege of Thagnor City has been lifted, Great King Kalvan finally has some breathing room. Styphon’s House has left the Upper Middle Kingdoms to lick its wounds and make trouble elsewhere in the Great Kingdoms. However, instead of waiting for the ruling houses to realize they no longer need Styphon’s House’s support, the Temple has decided to put its own puppets on the thrones of the Five Great Kingdoms. The result is Kalvan’s greatest fear—an all-out religious war. Styphon’s Own Voice has ordered Grand Master Soton to put together another huge army, the Host of Styphon’s Deliverance, to conquer the Kingdom of Hos-Agrys. The Agrysi League of Dralm begs Kalvan for aid against Styphon’s great host, but Kalvan has troubles of his own with Nythros, the last bastion of Styphon’s House in the Middle Kingdoms. He is more worried about this threat than anything that is happening in the Five Great Kingdoms. After all, where was the League of Dralm when Hostigos was under siege? A decision Kalvan may yet come to rue….Meanwhile, Prince Phidestros has his own problems. Great King Lysandros is returning from the disastrous siege of Thagnor with his tail between his legs. • Chase Your Shadow: The Trials of Oscar Pistorius

    John Carlin

    Hardcover (Harper, Dec. 9, 2014)
The definitive account of the rise and fall of South African Olympic and Gold Medal-winning Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, from his personal and athletic success to the murder charge that rocked the world and put both the man, and post-Apartheid South Africa, on trial.Oscar Pistorius made history as the first amputee to compete against able-bodied runners at the 2012 London Olympics. A hero in his native South Africa, the “Blade Runner” as he is known for his futuristic prosthetic legs, became a global icon of resilience and determination. But less than a year later, Pistorius rocked the world once again when he shot his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, through a closed bathroom door in the early hours of February14, 2013. Charged with murder, he claimed self-defense, contending that he had acted in a blind panic, imagining an intruder had broken in. But as the investigation moved to trial—during which the prosecution sought to prove that he killed her in a rage after an argument—a picture emerged of a traumatized individual fascinated with guns and assailed, behind the heroic facade, by anguish and self-doubt.Acclaimed journalist John Carlin follows the trials of this fallen champion, detailing his fraught upbringing, his almost superhuman rise to athletic glory, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding Steenkamp’s death. At the center of Pistorius’s story is South Africa—a young democracy stained by a history of racial disparity and levels of criminal violence that are among the highest in the world.Thoughtful and probing, Chase Your Shadow offers a piercing look at this intriguing modern tragedy, bringing to life a complex figure and the troubled land that shaped him.
