  • Bicycles: Love Poems

    Nikki Giovanni

Paperback (Harper Perennial, Feb. 1, 2010)
In a career that has earned her accolades, honorary degrees, and awards from both fellow poets and everyday poetry lovers, Nikki Giovanni has established herself as a writer who can entertain and challenge, inform and inspire. Sometimes controversial, sometimes ethereal, but always beautiful, her poems move readers of all hues and generations. With Bicycles, she's collected poems that serve as a companion to her 1997 Love Poems. An instant classic, that book—romantic, bold, and erotic—expressed notions of love in ways that were delightfully unexpected. In the years that followed, Giovanni experienced losses both public and private: a mother's passing, a sister's too, and a massacre on the campus where she teaches. Yet just when it seemed life was spinning out of control, Giovanni rediscovered love—what she calls the antidote. Here romantic love—and all its manifestations, the physical touch, the emotional pull, the hungry heart—is distilled as never before by one of our most talented poets.

  • The House By The Medlar Tree

    Giovanni Verga

    Mass Market Paperback (Signet, )
CLASSIC FICTION. Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) is the most important of the Italian Realist School of novelists. This new edition of "The House by the Medlar Tree (I Malavoglia)" makes the complete English version of his masterpiece available once more. The story of the Malavoglia, a family of poor Sicilian fisherman, is Verga's moving rendering of the theme of mankind's struggle for self-betterment, the dignity of the struggle in the face of poverty and hardship, and the tragedy that the struggle inevitably incurs. D. H. Lawrence described Vega's work as "Homeric." Raymond Rosenthal's translation of "I Malavoglia" is the only complete version of this novel in English and conveys Vega's lyrical realism and the flavor of Sicilian village life superbly. The book is introduced by Giovanni Cecchetti, whose own translations of Verga, "Mastro-don Gesualdo" and "The She-Wolf and Other Stories," are also available from California.

    Giovanni Ruffini

Paperback (Ulan Press, Sept. 1, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from Lorenzo Benoni: Or Passages in the Life of an ItalianAnd yet I had only a word to say to be free; but I would not say it. In the partition that divided my prison from the dining;room there was a small grated window, through which I could hear every word that was spoken on the other side. And more than once I had heard the canon broadly hint, during dinner-time, that pardon should be granted provided it were asked. But I was too highly exasperated at the treat ment I received to bring myself to ask forgiveness, and my uncle's hints dropped all unheeded. My thoughts were bent another way; plans of escape to Genoa were confusedly forming in my head. One night I went even as far as the house door, and had my hand on the latch; but my heart failed me. It was so dark without!About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
