  • White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide

    Carol Anderson

Paperback (Bloomsbury USA, Sept. 5, 2017)
National Book Critics Circle Award WinnerNew York Times BestsellerA New York Times Notable Book of the YearA Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of the YearA Boston Globe Best Book of 2016A Chicago Review of Books Best Nonfiction Book of 2016From the Civil War to our combustible present, White Rage reframes our continuing conversation about race, chronicling the powerful forces opposed to black progress in America--now in paperback with a new afterword by the author, acclaimed historian Carol Anderson. As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014, and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as “black rage,” historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in The Washington Post suggesting that this was, instead, "white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames," she argued, "everyone had ignored the kindling." Since 1865 and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, every time African Americans have made advances towards full participation in our democracy, white reaction has fueled a deliberate and relentless rollback of their gains. The end of the Civil War and Reconstruction was greeted with the Black Codes and Jim Crow; the Supreme Court's landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision was met with the shutting down of public schools throughout the South while taxpayer dollars financed segregated white private schools; the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 triggered a coded but powerful response, the so-called Southern Strategy and the War on Drugs that disenfranchised millions of African Americans while propelling presidents Nixon and Reagan into the White House, and then the election of America's first black President, led to the expression of white rage that has been as relentless as it has been brutal. Carefully linking these and other historical flashpoints when social progress for African Americans was countered by deliberate and cleverly crafted opposition, Anderson pulls back the veil that has long covered actions made in the name of protecting democracy, fiscal responsibility, or protection against fraud, rendering visible the long lineage of white rage. Compelling and dramatic in the unimpeachable history it relates, White Rage will add an important new dimension to the national conversation about race in America.

  • Big Book of Gum Drop Notes - Salmon Level - Piano Sheet Music: Scales Aren't Just a Fish Thing - Igniting Sleeping Brains through music

    Carol JC Anderson

    language (, April 25, 2017)
The tunes in this level of the Big Book of Gum Drop Notes are a bit of a challenge. Salmon swim against the current. It is a challenge for them but they are mono-focused. They want to accomplish the task. This is what will be required of us in this level of playing. Using the 'gumdrop notes' makes it easier. Almost too easy. It doesn't seem to be an upstream battle. It isn't our goal to become sophisticated or classy. Our goal is to learn to sight-read music as if it were a second language. Learning happens best when we are having fun. Most of all, our purpose is to ignite our sleeping brains, by using music as the catalyst, to pull each of us through whatever it is that challenges us. The Gum Drop Notes are an amazing system of color-coded notes structured to teach music theory without our being aware. Included in the Salmon level are Suzuki Piano Songs and fun tunes. The difference is that the Suzuki songs are challenges. They are written in the same key as the Suzuki violin. This way a family can play together and have a wild time. Here are a list of the tunes:Perpetual Motion DoublesPerpetual Motion - SoloAllouetteAndantinoRing Around the RosieAllegrettoAnimal FairAll the Pretty Little PoniesHappy BirthdayOde to JoyEtude - SoloEtude DoublesBingo - SoloBingo with rests

It is like an opera where people sing, chamber groups play and orchestras are hired and it tells a story. The difference? The opera uses costumes and performers. The oratorio is just singing. Chorus was an oratorio performed at the Theatre-Royal in the Covent-Garden. Chorus is the first song in book two of the Suzuki repertoire. Scales Aren't Just a Fish Thing is a method of teaching music sight-reading that provides clues and crutches to ensure an accurate first experience with learning something new. Color-coded music, music theory card games and play-along music are all part of this method to ensure excellence and memorization.
