  • The Story of a Needle

    A. L. O. E.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 29, 2018)
Excerpt from The Story of a NeedleNor have I any recollection of being drawn out into wire, forced to push myself through little holes, smaller and smaller, till I was long enough and slim enough for the purpose for which the manufacturer designed me. My very earliest remembrance is of finding myself lying on an anvil, along with thousands of others of my species. But you must not fancy me then, gentle reader, in the least like the neat, trim, bright little article that now has the pleasure of addressing you. I fancy that I looked uncommonly like a bit of steel wire, neither useful nor ornamental.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A. L. O. E.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 21, 2018)
Excerpt from The Lake of the Woods: A Story of the BackwoodsIt is so bright that I think that you could see to read to me by it, Amy. Take the Bible, my child and let me hear some of its words of com fort.Amy took the Bible from the bed-side, and kneeling by the fire, turned over some of the pages, seeking for some favourite passage, something to soothe a suffering spirit that might soon be taking flight, something of heaven, she said, to herself. But then the thought arose, I could not read such a passage aloud, I could not command my voice - I Should break down - and my father must not see me in tears, and the daughter turned over leaf after leaf to hide her emotion, as one who is trying, but in vain, to find out some particular chapter or verse.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Rambles of a Rat

    A. L. O. E

Paperback (Independently published, July 16, 2020)
MY very earliest recollection is of running about in a shed adjoining a large warehouse, somewhere in the neighbourhood of Poplar, and close to the River Thames, which thereabouts is certainly no silver stream. A merry life we led of it in that shed, my seven brothers and I! It was a sort of palace of rubbish, a mansion of odds and ends, where rats might frolic and gambol, and play at hide-and-seek, to their hearts’ content. We had nibbled a nice little way into the warehouse above mentioned; and there, every night, we feasted at our ease, growing as sleek and plump as any rats in the United Kingdom.
