Elizabethan era story of Romance, Love and Intrigue. This book has similarities to a true story. Narrated by a Frenchman named Malcolm Vernon, who followed doomed Queen Mary, (poor Mary), from France to Scotland. When things start to turn desperate for Mary, Malcolm hightails it to England, to hide out with his cousins at Hadden Hall. This is where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful, reckless, stubborn, strong and clever Dorothy. But, alas, she loves John Manners; her father's worst enemy's son. A lot of secret wooing between these two unfolds, despite the bitter family feud. A fun read, and illustration of human nature changing very little in over five hundred years.

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. Since I play no mean part in the events of this chronicle, a few words concerning my own history previous to the opening of the story I am about to tell you will surely not be amiss, and they may help you to a better understanding of my narrative. To begin with an unimportant fact—unimportant, that is, to you—my name is Malcolm François de Lorraine Vernon. My father was cousin-german to Sir George Vernon, at and near whose home, Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, occurred the events which will furnish my theme.
