The Angel of the Battlefield was the reverent title given to Clara Barton (1821--1912), in honor of her care for wounded Civil War soldiers. After the conflict, she turned her God-given compassion toward easing the suffering of family members who lost loved ones in the battles. Ultimately, Clara Barton would prepare for future calamities--wars and natural disasters--by founding the American Red Cross.
