    Charles Fillmore

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 24, 2017)
1."There is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding." (Job 32:8) The science that is here set forth is founded upon Spirit. It does not always conform to intellectual standards, but it is, nevertheless, scientific. The facts of Spirit are of a spiritual character and, when understood in their right relation, they are orderly. Orderliness is law, and is the test of true science. 2.The lawful truths of Spirit are more scientific than the constantly shifting opinions based on intellectual standards. The only real science is the science of Spirit. It never changes. It is universally accepted by all who are in Spirit, but one must be "in the Spirit" before one can understand this science of Spirit. The mind of Spirit must become active in those who would grasp the orderly science of Being that these lessons proclaim. 3.It is not absolutely necessary that the spiritual part of man's nature be active at the beginning of his study of this science. The primal object of the lessons is to quicken the spiritual realm of consciousness and to bring about the "breath of the Almighty" that gives understanding.

Here is Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore's first book, originally published in 1909, in which we find his early ideas on the Twelve Powers, the seminal concept of his whole metaphysics. We also see how he originally formulated Unity to be a movement of universal spiritual science based on principles that could be proved and demonstrated. Here also is the sense of Unity as a great mystical tradition that draws from all religions and all faiths. While Charles used the word Christian in his title because to him the book was based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, he did not want to be limited by any sense of being denominational. Charles saw Unity as transdenominational, as helping people find the Truth in every tradition.Charles Fillmore clearly saw Unity as a spiritual science that needed to be practiced, not merely believed in or obeyed. The statements that follow each chapter of this book are not meant merely to be read, but applied to daily living. He intended this book to be a manual of mental disciplines that anyone could use to foster spiritual healing through the use of denials and affirmations.Christian Healing is a foundational work for Unity and New Thought teachings.

These are not simply lectures; they are, rather, lessons. They are not merely to beread; they are to be studied and applied as one studies and applies mathematical rules. When the text suggests that the reader "hold a thought," or affirm or deny a certainproposition, the student should stop reading, and both audibly and mentally do asbidden. This will set up new thought currents in mind and body, and will make way forthe spiritual illumination that will follow in all who are faithful to these instructions. The statements following each lesson should be used for mental discipline. Writethese statements down and apply them daily while studying the lesson to which theycorrespond. Anyone can do spiritual healing who will use the simple rules of denial andaffirmation here set forth. If you wish to heal another, hold him in mind and mentallyrepeat the denials and affirmations; this will raise your consciousness to spiritual reality, where all healing power originates.

    Charles Fillmore

    (Bibliotech Press, Jan. 15, 2019)
Charles Sherlock Fillmore (August 22, 1854 – July 5, 1948) founded Unity, a church within the New Thought movement, with his wife, Myrtle Page Fillmore, in 1889. He became known as an American mystic for his contributions to spiritualist interpretations of biblical Scripture. He was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on August 22, 1854.An ice skating accident when he was ten broke Fillmore's hip and left him with lifelong disabilities. In his early years, despite little formal education, he studied Shakespeare, Tennyson, Emerson and Lowell as well as works on spiritualism, Eastern religions, and metaphysics. He met his future wife, Mary Caroline "Myrtle" Page, in Denison, Texas in the mid-1870s. After losing his job there, he moved to Gunnison, Colorado where he worked at mining and real estate. He married Myrtle in Clinton, Missouri on March 29, 1881 and the newlyweds moved to Pueblo, Colorado, where Charles established a real estate business with the brother-in-law of Nona Lovell Brooks, who was later to found the Church of Divine Science. After the births of their first two sons, Lowell Page Fillmore and Waldo Rickert Fillmore, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Two years later, in 1886, Charles and Myrtle attended New Thought classes held by Dr. E. B. Weeks. Myrtle subsequently recovered from chronic tuberculosis and attributed her recovery to her use of prayer and other methods learned in Weeks's classes. Subsequently, Charles began to heal from his childhood accident, a development which he too attributed to following this philosophy. Charles Fillmore became a devoted student of philosophy and religion. In 1889, Charles and Myrtle began publication of a new periodical, 'Modern Thought', notable among other things as the first publication to accept for publication the writings of the then 27-year-old New Thought pioneer William Walker Atkinson. In 1890, they announced a prayer group that would later be called 'Silent Unity'. In 1891, Fillmore's 'Unity' magazine was first published. Dr. H. Emilie Cady published 'Lessons in Truth' in the new magazine. This material later was compiled and published in a book by the same name, which served as a seminal work of the Unity Church. Although Charles had no intention of making Unity into a denomination, his students wanted a more organized group. He and his wife were among the first ordained Unity ministers in 1906. Charles and Myrtle Fillmore operated the Unity organizations from a campus near downtown Kansas City.Myrtle Fillmore died in 1931. Charles remarried in 1933 to Cora G. Dedrick who was a collaborator on his later writings. Charles Fillmore died in 1948. Unity continued, growing into a worldwide movement; Unity World Headquarters at Unity Village and Unity Worldwide Ministries are the organizations of the movement. (wikipedia.org)

Charles Fillmore teaches you how to heal yourself in this New Thought classic. He writes about the power of thought and words, of prayer, praise, faith and imagination. And of course, love. Each chapter ends with some affirmations, or little one line prayers. And right at the end of the book is a sort of question and answer thing.

These are the key writings of the Unity Church, a major New Thought movement. "The New Thought Movement or New Thought is a loosely allied group of organizations, authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of metaphysical beliefs concerning healing, life force, Creative Visualization, and personal power. The New Thought Movement developed in the United States during the mid to late 19th century and continues to the present time. It promotes the ideas that God is all powerful and ubiquitous, Spirit is the totality of all things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, most sickness originates in the mind, and "right thinking" has a healing effect." It is certainly without doubt the most practical and clearest thing ever written on this great subject, to make man or woman understand, appreciate, and realize what the actual meanings of Jesus Christ's teachings are. It is the greatest help the centuries has ever produced, and its author is taught of God and has had the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Every word and sentence and paragraph is full of life and healing, because it teaches why the Truth is true, and simply illumines all the way. Truly it is a wonderful master work, an unfailing guide to the understanding of the Truth which the Master taught to free mankind from everything that holds us in bondage.

Indeed, there is nothing new about spiritual healing. It was successfully practiced by Jesus and His immediate followers, who realized their authority over the natural elements. His healing secrets were re-discovered in XIX century, and Fillmores were among the pioneers of this new healing movement. Their convictions were supported by their experiences - both Charles and Myrtle Fillmore healed themselves and many others through the power of faith.
