This is a novel by american writer and poet Alice Duer Miller, who as a poet, became known as a campaigner for women's suffrage and published a brilliant series of satirical poems in the New York Tribune. This is probably her lightest novel, directed mostly to children. A Christmas story full of hope and good feelings, a light read with a cute love story-line.

Geoffrey Holland stood up and for the second time surveyed the restaurant in search of other members of his party, two fingers in the pocket of his waistcoat, as if they had just relinquished his watch. He was tall enough to be conspicuous and well bred enough to be indifferent to the fact, good looking, in a bronzed, blond clean-shaven way, and branded in the popular imagination as a young and active millionaire. At a neighbouring table a man lent forward and whispered to the other men and women with him: "Do you know who that is?—that is young Holland." "What, that boy! He doesn't look as if he were out of school." "No," said one of the women, elaborating the comment, "he does not look old enough to order a dinner, let alone managing mines." "Oh, I guess he can order a dinner all right," said the first man. "He is older than he looks. He must be twenty-six." "What do you suppose he does with all that money?" The first thing he did with it, at the moment, was to purchase an evening paper, for just then he snapped his fingers at a boy, who promptly ran to get him one.

How can Holland discharge his duty to see McVay punished for his crimes, whilst also winning the love of the criminal's sister...?A brief novella from Alice Duer Miller, an author previously known to me largely because of her collection, Are Women People? A Book Of Rhymes For Suffrage Times , which offers a poetic argument in favor of women's suffrage, The Burglar and the Blizzard was first published in 1914. Somehow, perhaps because of the author's support of a woman's right to vote, I expected something a little less conventional from this holiday romance. When Geoffrey Holland is intrigued, at the beginning of the story, by reports of a woman's possible involvement in the thefts, I wondered if we were in for a lady burglar. Alas, that was not to be, and the reader instead discovers a fairly traditional tale of a hapless (and very beautiful) young girl, and the wealthy, powerful man who falls (inexplicably) in love with her and decides to shield her from the unfortunate truth about her brother. I've nothing against traditional love stories, as it happens, but this one failed to entertain. I simply couldn't muster much sympathy for the characters, or interest in their eventual fate

“A strikingly original Christmas story – the ideal book to give instead of a Christmas card.” -The Bookman, Volume 40, September, 1914 “Like most of Mrs. Miller’s work, ‘The Burglar and the Blizzard’ is a tale of very modern people and places every one knows, or at least knows all about. There are but three characters – a worldly bachelor, his former college classmate, recently turned second-story worker, and the innocent and charming sister of the latter. The character drawing of the ill-assorted trio is capital, the dialogue is as good as Mrs. Miller has ever done, and the situations are as unique as they are humorous.” -Collier's, Volume 34, Issues 1-14, October 15, 1904 The Burglar and The Blizzard is the story of a young millionaire named Geoffrey Holland. He's young, tall, handsome and well-built like all young millionaires of his time. The book is set in Hillsborough, the English countryside. Everyone in the area had been victims of a recent spate of burglaries, apart from Mr Holland and his sister Mrs. May. Until one day Mrs. May receives a telegram that her house been broken into. Mr Geoffrey Holland sets off for Hillsborough to check if Mrs May's house is all right and to see if he could catch the burglar himself, as he reaches the house a dangerous blizzard starts and is stuck at the house. As Mr Holland does not know what could be inside the house or even around the corner! The plot thickens with suspense, heroes and even a bit of romance. If you enjoy a great Christmas story read on and find out what happens in Mrs. May's house on that cold and snowy day.
