    eBook (Digireads.com, April 1, 2004)
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American author, naturalist, photographer and movie producer who drew primarily on her Midwestern farm roots for inspiration in her work. She grew up on an Indiana farm, one of twelve children, and spent her life outdoors drawing sketches and taking notes and photographs. She began her career contributing articles and photographs to magazines including "Recreation", "Outing" and "McCalls", and debuted her first novel, "Cardinal", in 1903. In 1911, Stratton-Porter published "The Harvester", a romance novel set in her beloved Midwestern woodlands featuring a Thoreau-esque hero. David Langston, the Harvester, is a reclusive young man who lives a solitary life cultivating medicinal herbs and flowers. Visions of a dream girl consume the young man until he meets the beautiful, but feeble, Ruth Jameson. This enchanting story of devotion and sacrifice set in the charming solace of nature will excite and captivate its audience from cover to cover.

A Gripping Romance in a Natural Setting ā€œTo my way of thinking and working, the greatest service a piece of fiction can do any reader is to leave him with a higher ideal of life than he had when he began. If in one small degree it shows him where he can beā€¦gentler, saner, cleaner, kindlierā€¦it is a wonder-working book. If it opens his eyes to one beauty in nature he never saw for himself and leads him one step toward the God of the Universe, it is a beneficial bookā€¦ā€ ā€• Gene Stratton-Porter In Gene Stratton-Porter's novel, The Harvester, a noble and kind man harvests wild plants for medicines. When meets the woman of his dreams, he pursues her with all his heart. This Xist Classics edition has been professionally formatted for e-readers with a linked table of contents. • The Harvester

eBook (Jazzybee Verlag, April 27, 2017)
Mrs. Gene Stratton-Porter's novel is an illustration of the harmony and intimacy which does rightly exist between a man and a forest. In ' The Harvester ' she has not only dramatized, but proved the purifying and preservative forces that are always present and predominant in such a situation. This is why the story is so popular. It is utterly simple, nothing in the plot to appeal to morbid interest or curiosity. We really prefer what is good and clean in man and in nature if we can get it portrayed in fiction.

"Bel, come here!" The Harvester sat in the hollow worn in the hewed log stoop by the feet of his father and mother and his own sturdier tread, and rested his head against the casing of the cabin door when he gave the command. The tip of the dog's nose touched the gravel between his paws as he crouched flat on earth, with beautiful eyes steadily watching the master, but he did not move a muscle."Bel, come here!"Twinkles flashed in the eyes of the man when he repeated the order, while his voice grew more imperative as he stretched a lean, wiry hand toward the dog. The animal's eyes gleamed and his sensitive nose quivered, yet he lay quietly."Belshazzar, kommen Sie hier!"The body of the dog arose on straightened legs and his muzzle dropped in the outstretched palm. A wind slightly perfumed with the odour of melting snow and unsheathing buds swept the lake beside them, and lifted a waving tangle of light hair on the brow of the man, while a level ray of the setting sun flashed across the water and illumined the graven, sensitive face, now alive with keen interest in the game being played.
