    Excerpt from A Critical Pronouncing Dictionary, and Expositor of the English Language: In Which Not Only the Meaning of Every Word Is Clearly Explained, and the Sound of Every Syllable Distinctly Shown, But, Where Words Are Subject to Different Pronunciations, the Authorities of Our Best Pronouncing Dictionaries Are Fully ExhibitedThe work I have to offer on the fubjet't has, I hope, added fomethmg to the publick lioek: it net only exhibits the principles of pronunciation on a more extenfive plan than others have done, divides the nords into fyllables, and marks the founds of the vowels like Dr. Kenrick, f pells the v~ ords as they are pronounced like Mr. Sheridan, and directs the infpcƩtor to the rule by the word like Mr. Nares but, where words are fubjeƩl to different pronunciations, it {hows the reafons from analogy for each. Produces authorities for one fide and the Other, and points out the pronunciation which is preferable.
