  • Sea and Sardinia

    D. H. Lawrence, Mara Kalnins, Jill Franks

Paperback (Penguin Classics, Oct. 1, 1999)
An intriguing account of Sicilian life that reveals as much about the writer as the place, people, and customs it describesWritten after the First World War when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence's journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his delighted response to a new landscape and people and his uncanny ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art. Like his other travel writings the book is also a shrewd inquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. This edition restores censored pasages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal the book Lawrence himself called "a marvel of veracity."For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Audio Cassette (Books on Tape, Inc., Sept. 1, 1989)
D.H. Lawrence's importance to the 20th-century literature extends beyond his achievement as a novelist: his uncompromising moral vision, his fierce puritanism, his vigorous devotion to the natural man defined a character in many ways more intense than those he created in fiction. In SEA AND SARDINIA, this character stands revealed against the stoney background of Sardinia. The island's hard and independent people, its little inns, the unique costumes and character of each village, come to sharp and vivid life through Lawrence's prose. "This book is rich not only with a portrait of Sardinia, but also of Lawrence--of his moral sense and the richness of his literary imagination. It is a walk in the company of genius." Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 15, 2018)
Sea and Sardinia is a travel book by the English writer D. H. Lawrence. It describes a brief excursion undertaken in January 1921 by Lawrence and Frieda, his wife a.k.a. Queen Bee, from Taormina in Sicily to the interior of Sardinia. They visited Cagliari, Mandas, Sorgono, and Nuoro. His visit to Nuoro was a kind of homage to Grazia Deledda but involved no personal encounter. Despite the brevity of his visit, Lawrence distills an essence of the island and its people that is still recognizable today. Extracts were originally printed in The Dial during October and November 1921 and the book was first published in New York, USA in 1921 by Thomas Seltzer, with illustrations by Jan Juta. A British edition, published by Martin Secker, came out in April 1923.

    D H Lawrence, Will Jonson

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 13, 2015)
David Herbert Richards Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, literary critic and painter who published under the name D. H. Lawrence. He is valued by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism, as well as one of the finest writers in English literature. After the traumatic experience of World War I, Lawrence be-gan what he termed his "savage pilgrimage," a time of voluntary exile, where he escaped with his wife from England and spent the remainder of his life travelling. In 1921, Lawrence joined the British literary tradition of writing a travelogue. He and his wife, Frieda, embarked on a jour-ney to Sardinia for its promise of unspoiled primitiveness and lack of many tourists. "Sea and Sardinia" records Lawrence's voyage to Sardinia, revealing his response to the new landscape and inhabitants of this part of the Mediterranean. It is also a self-revealing journal in which Law-rence's passions, rages, and perspectives get frequent work-out.

    D. H. Lawrence

Paperback (Bottom of the Hill Publishing, Jan. 1, 2012)
Sea and Sardinia is a travel book by the English writer D. H. Lawrence. It describes his excursion with his wife Frieda from Taormina to the interior of Sardinia. They visited Cagliari, Mandas, Sorgono, and Nuoro. Despite the brevity of his visit, Lawrence distils an essence of the island and its people that is still recognizable today. "Very dark under the great carob tree as we go down the steps. Dark still the garden. Scent of mimosa, and then of jasmine. The lovely mimosa tree invisible. Dark the stony path. The goat whinnies out of her shed. The broken Roman tomb which lolls right over the garden track does not fall on me as I slip under its massive tilt. Ah, dark garden, dark garden, with your olives and your wine, your medlars and mulberries and many almond trees, your steep terraces ledged high up above the sea, I am leaving you, slinking out. Out between the rosemary hedges, out of the tall gate, on to the cruel steep stony road. So under the dark, big eucalyptus trees, over the stream, and up towards the village. There, I have got so far." D. H. Lawrence was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter whose works represent a reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. In his writings Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, and instinct often apposing current social acceptance. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, described him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation."
