The story is about a young boy, Timothy Hardbuckle, who gets accidentally left behind in the UK when his large, eccentric family emigrate to Australia. But when his uncle has to go away on a secret government mission, Timothy’s troubles really begin. He comes into contact with two very unpleasant people, Mr Grimple and Mr Gripe, who dislike children and almost everything else in the world. They make his life (and other peoples’ lives) miserable, but they underestimate Timothy’s bravery, intelligence and his clever battle plans. They are no match for his ingenuity and his special powers, which he acquires through the mysterious Mr Warner.
