The Mad King is a novel by "Tarzan" creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, originally published in two parts as "The Mad King" and "Barney Custer of Beatrice" in All-Story Weekly, in 1914 and 1915, respectively. These were combined for the book edition, first published in hardcover by A. C. McClurg in 1926.Set in the fictional European kingdom of Lutha, the protagonist is a young American named Barney Custer, of Beatrice, Nebraska, who is the son of an American farmer and a runaway Luthan princess, Victoria Rubinroth. Unaware of his royal blood, much less that he is a dead ringer for his relative Leopold, the current king of Lutha, Barney visits Lutha on the eve of the First World War to see for himself his mother's native land. As he arrives in Lutha, King Leopold has just escaped from his ten years' imprisonment at the hands of his scheming uncle, Prince Peter of Blentz. Much to his own and everyone else's confusion, Barney is naturally mistaken for the king, leading to numerous complications.

Enjoy a Fast-Paced Tale of Suspense and Adventure in The Mad KingThe Mad King is a somewhat uncommon story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, when compared to most of his work. While Burroughs' general approach is the same in including a strong hero who is filled with virtue and good intentions, the unfolding tale is quite eccentric and unique, while offering some meaningful insights about how it would later unfold right from the very start. The story is about a young American who visits the country of β€œLatha” together with his mother, who was born there. The story quickly turns from a delightful page turner to a truly suspenseful and fast-paced novel you won't be able to put down too easily. When our hero is mistakenly believed to be a missing, crazy king, and locked up, all depends on his skills and ingenuity. While his resourcefulness comes in handy, however, he soon realizes that there are other forces involved – namely his own heart, as he soon falls in love with a beautiful maiden. While interesting, easy to follow and easy to become addicted to, The Mad King may take some time to get used to. Burroughs' writing style is in line with everything you might expect from a novel written more than 100 years ago, and more, offering a complex plot line, a character that grows and evolves over the course of the book, and many surprising and quite fascinating turns of events that will keep you on your toes throughout the read. You may be more interested in a quiet, enjoyable story you can simply read in the evening close to the fireplace. Or you might rather be drawn to an exciting story that you simply can't put down, even if you wanted to. The Mad King is all this and more, exploring themes such as the success of endurance and resourcefulness in overcoming hardship, as well as a love story that will likely shake you up.

For ten years no man of them had set eyes upon the face of the boy-king who had been hastened to the grim castle of Blentz upon the death of the old king, his father. There had been murmurings then when the lad's uncle, Peter of Blentz, had announced to the people of Lutha the sudden mental affliction which had fallen upon his nephew, and more murmurings for a time after the announcement that Peter of Blentz had been appointed Regent during the lifetime of the young King Leopold, "or until God, in His infinite mercy, shall see fit to restore to us in full mental vigor our beloved monarch."
