  • Old Christmas

    Washington Irving, Randolph Caldecott

Paperback (Dover Publications, Sept. 13, 2005)
Washington Irving's delightful account of a festive Christmas holiday includes five incomparable essays. Written well over a century ago, Irving's sketches "celebrate the celebration" with heartwarming descriptions of Yuletide events. Irving recalls with warmth and wonder his many colorful experiences of a traditional Victorian Christmas while a guest at an English estate — from the Christmas Eve trip by a stagecoach filled with "rosy-cheeked boys" returning from school, and scenes of domestic hilarity during holiday games, to solemn services at the village church and the return home to a sumptuous holiday dinner. Enhanced with more than 100 charming illustrations by noted nineteenth-century artist Randolph Caldecott, this engaging book helped nurture America's recognition of the holiday. Perfect for gift-giving, the collection elicits from a master American storyteller a magical remembrance of Christmas past.

    Washington Irving

Paperback (Cosimo Classics, Dec. 1, 2005)
After the dance was concluded, the whole party was entertained with brawn and beef, and stout home-brewed. The Squire himself mingled among the rustics, and was received with awkward demonstrations of deference and regard. -from "Christmas Day" Warmly convivial and delightfully festival, this charming and long forgotten holiday classic, by one of American literature's most beloved writers, was inspired, in part, by Dickens' A Christmas Carol and other celebrations of oldtime Yule. Splendid suppers and rural churches, cheerful dances and hearty spirits imbue this short novel with the magic of the season. This festive work, first published in 1896, deserves to be a holiday tradition alongside Dickens in the celebrations of the winter solstice. American author WASHINGTON IRVING (1783-1859) wrote extensively in the areas of history and historical biography but is best known for his short fiction, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

  • Old Christmas

    Washington Irving, Randolph Caldecott

Hardcover (Chapman Billies, Jan. 1, 1996)
This handsome edition of Washington IrvingÂ’s Old Christmas contains all of the 110 illustrations that Randolph Caldecott originally prepared for it. The text of Old Christmas first appeared as five chapters in IrvingÂ’s Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., published in 1819-20. This is the classic that contained his Rip van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - a cornucopia, indeed. IrvingÂ’s "celebration of the celebration" preceded DickenÂ’s Christmas Carol by nearly a quarter century and helped to nurture AmericaÂ’s recognition of the holiday. An early review of the 1875 edition claimed, "the book is intended for the fireside of the reading folks of all classes. Surely it has seldom happened in the history of illustration that an author should be so very closely followed-if not overtaken-by his illustrator."

Written by Washington Irving, who is said to have been a favorite of Charles Dickens, Old Christmas is an enchanting series of stories about Yuletide celebrations in nineteenth century England. Spend Christmas Eve coaching through the countryside where Irving meets his old traveling companion Frank Bracebridge, who invites him to attend Christmas Day festivities at his father's country estate. The descriptions of the village, church services, Christmas games and the amazing feast are truly delightful. These stories first appeared in Irving's "Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon" in the early 1800's. The Christmas stories were then published together as a "gift book" in 1875. This version is illustrated with hundreds of lively drawings by Randolph Caldecott, engraved by James D. Cooper. Caldecott, one of the most influential illustrators of the late nineteenth century, is the namesake of the Caldecott Medal, awarded annually since 1937 for the best illustrated children's book.
