From Plotzk to Boston is an American women's biography by Mary Antin., Mary Antin's vivid description of all she and her dear ones went through, enables us to see almost with our own eyes how the invasion of America appears to the impecunious invader. It is thus "a human document" of considerable value, as well as a promissory note of future performance. The quick senses of the child, her keen powers of observation and introspection, her impressionability both to sensations and complex emotions--these are the very things out of which literature is made; the raw stuff of art.

Mary Antin was born in Polotsk, Russia in 1881. Like many Jews in Russia, her family suffered under the progroms of the late 19th century and tried to emigrate to America. Leaving Russia was forbidden, and many Jews had to be smuggled across border to Germany before travelling by train to the port of Hamburg, where they were brought to emigration halls and put on ships to America. When Antin was thirteen when her family completed this migration and settled in the slums of Boston. Despite many hardships, she attended the prestigious Boston Latin School and wrote her first biography which was published in 1894 under the title 'From Plotzk to Boston'. Told in a simple way, this story reveals Antin's acute powers of observation. In 1912 she wrote her famous and more scholarly autobiography' The Promised Land' and became a supporter of Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party.

The "infant phenomenon" in literature is rarer than in more physical branches of art, but its productions are not likely to be of value outside the doting domestic circle. Even Pope who "lisped in numbers for the numbers came," did not add to our Anthology from his cradle, though he may therein have acquired his monotonous rocking-metre. Immaturity of mind and experience, so easily disguised on the stage or the music-stool—even by adults—is more obvious in the field of pure intellect. The contribution with which Mary Antin makes her début in letters is, however, saved from the emptiness of embryonic thinking by being a record of a real experience, the greatest of her life; her journey from Poland to Boston.

Mary Antin (1881-1949) was an American author and immigration rights activist. Born to a Jewish family in Polotsk, she immigrated to the Boston area with her mother and siblings in 1894. She later moved to New York City where she attended Teachers College of Columbia University and Barnard College. Antin is best known for her 1912 autobiography The Promised Land, which describes her assimilation into American culture. After its publication, Antin lectured on her immigrant experience to many audiences across the country, and she became a major supporter for Theodore Roosevelt and his Progressive Party. Amongst her other works are From Plotzk to Boston (1899), They Who Knock at Our Gates (1914) and At School in the Promised Land (1928).
