Beadle, the editor of this account, examines the history of the Mormon church and the reasons behind the church’s lack of action over Hickman’s brutal crimes. He also questions how Hickman remained in positions of power despite knowledge of his murderous ways being publicly known. Hickman’s account sheds light on these issues as well as providing a unique insight into the mind of an infamous murderer and is an important addition to the history of the nineteenth century Mormon church. William Adams "Wild Bill" Hickman was an American frontiersman. He also served as a representative to the Utah Territorial Legislature. Hickman was baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1839 by John D. Lee. He later served as a personal bodyguard for Joseph Smith, Jr. and Brigham Young. Hickman was reputedly a member of the Danites. He died in Wyoming in 1883.

Bill Hickman portrays Brigham as charismatic but controlling preacher, with sermons used to keep his followers and fellow settlers of the West in line. Hickman himself was a professional gunslinger, responsible for numerous assassinations which he confesses in this book. He was also a polygamist, having married a total of ten wives during his time in the Church of Latter-Day Saints. In 1868 Hickman was excommunicated from the ranks of the church, and a few years he was later charged with murder. Following his arrest, Hickman was held under military guard in an early form of witness protection. Although easy to dismiss out of hand as mere falsehood or exaggeration, William Hickman's memoirs were considered to be of some value by several of his former associates and the federal authorities. His implication of Brigham Young as being the man who ordered the murder of Richard Yates was notorious - despite his willingness to testify against the Mormon church, nothing came of Hickman's allegations and he was eventually released from custody.

At this time there was only two settlements in the valley south; the first was on American Fork, a stream some two or three rods wide, emptying into Utah Lake. The next was a settlement on Provo River, fifteen miles further south; some three miles from Utah Lake. This river was claimed by a strong band of Indians. These Utah Indians went by different names, such as Timpa-Utes, PiUtes, Tampa-TJtes and Gosh-Utes, each having its Chief, fishing and hunting grounds, &c, which they claimed as their own; but in reality they were all the same tribe, spoke the same language, and would hunt and fish on each other's lands, as a general thing, unmolested. Sometimes these different bands would have difficulty; but in war with the whites they were all united. This Provo band was considered very brave, having held that river for a long time. The Mormons got permission of them to settle there, and made them presents, and they were glad to have them...
