Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 25, 2014)
Zip belongs to Dr. Elsworth, who lives in the big, white house with the green blinds on the edge of the village of Maplewood. And at the present minute he is asleep on the front porch on a soft cushion in an old-fashioned rocking-chair that is swaying gently to and fro, dreaming of the days when he was a puppy chasing the white spot on the end of his tail, thinking it was something following him. And how he would bark at it and run around and around after it until he was so dizzy he would fall over! Then when the ground stopped spinning round, he would get up and go after it again, barking all the time for it to stop following him. Silly little puppy that he was, not to know it was his own tail he was chasing! Often he would bark so loudly in his sleep that it would awaken him, but he would soon fall asleep again and go on dreaming. Sometimes he would be chasing cows, holding on to their long tails; at others, squawking, cackling chickens or anything else that happened to be in the road.

No wonder Zip, the Adventures of a Frisky Fox Terrier is so popular with children - the story was developed by the author in collaboration with her audience, during the afternoons Montgomery spent with kids in her home, weaving stories and developing characters together with her guests. Though Montgomery is best known for her stories about a goat called Billy Whiskers, this short novel about Zip the dog also captivates the attention of young readers and is ranked as one of the most popular children's books of all times. The principle character of the novel is Zip, a little fox terrier who lives in Maplewood with his owner, a doctor. He frequently accompanies his master on his trips to visit patients, and he not only entertains his master during these journeys, but he also gathers and passes on information and the latest news in the animal kingdom and gets involved in all kinds of mischief. We see Zip do everything a tiny fox terrier is expected to do: he tries to solve a case of burglary, he snatches fried chicken from a picnic, he gets stuck in tight places and fights with other animals, too.The book is perfect for kids who already love dogs and for those who don't love them yet. The story features a cute, lively little dog - the dream of any child who loves animals - and shows how nice it is to own a dog like this to kids who have not yet become dog fans, too. Written at the end of the 19th century, Zip, the Adventures of a Frisky Fox Terrier, by Frances Trego Montgomery is an old-fashioned children's story, written in beautiful language, in an entertaining style - great fun to read not only for the little ones, but for teenagers and adults as well.
