  • Through Spain to the Sahara

    Matilda B etham-Edwards

    eBook (@AnnieRoseBooks, Jan. 31, 2018)
ON a golden autumn afternoon we found ourselves in the old city of Tours, bound for Spain and the enchanted lands lying north of the Great Sahara. Pleasant it was to look backward and forward; backward to the busy life in England, forward to the bright holiday of travel, repeating to ourselves again and again the sentiment, if not the words, of Catullus:—
  • Through Spain to the Sahara ...

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
  • Through Spain to the Sahara

    Matilda Betham-Edwards

Paperback (Cambridge University Press, Sept. 30, 2010)
Journalist, children's author and translator, Matilda Betham-Edwards inspired a generation of writers. A correspondent of Henry James and a friend of George Eliot, she belonged to a literary network that spanned the globe. Published in 1868, her account of her journey to the Sahara received immediate critical acclaim for its graceful prose and intelligent insights. Leading readers through the Dordogne to Madrid and on to the mosques and malaria of North Africa, Edwards introduces her audience to relics, landscapes and ancient edifices that reflect a wide spectrum of religions and societies. A farmer's daughter, she pays special attention to the living and working conditions of agricultural communities and their struggle for survival in nineteenth-century Europe. As one reviewer for the Examiner explained, 'stay at home readers can hardly do their travelling by proxy more easily than by running through her entertaining pages'.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 28, 2017)
"Miss Edward's sketches are lively and original, and her volume supplies pleasant reading." -The Athenaeum "In these entertaining pages, Miss Edwards tells us pleasantly and gracefully of her wanderings in Spain. All she writes is fresh and sparking." -The Examiner "With a light pen, Miss Betham-Edwards has touched on personal adventures, curious customs, splendid scenery and people of note. She has had an eye for the picturesque and unusual, and she has had no desire to make out that anything she did was particularly wonderful or that she deserved great credit for the inevitable discomforts of travel she bore. She has in fact written a readable book of wanderings in a little-traveled region." -The New York Times "Those who have unlimited time and money at command may choose to take the very circuitous route from this western world to Africa, that Miss Edwards and a lady friend appear to have pursued....These stories...suggest the idea that the 'regeneration of Algeria' is rather a distant matter, and that how it is to be accomplished is still an open question. But the energy of the French and other colonists contrasts strongly with the sleepy indifference of the Spaniards, and it appears certain enough that in conveniences for the traveler Algeria, though only the creation of yesterday, is very far ahead of proud old Castille. This is the point that tourists chiefly look to, and that the fact is so, Miss Edwards' handsome book establishes beyond a doubt; when it follows that they will better to visit Telemsen than Granada, the approach being at least quite as easy, and according to our authoress, the inhabitants far the more civilized and friendly to strangers." -The United Service Magazine
