    James Willard Schultz

    eBook
This book is a thrilling Indian story written by a famous old-time frontiersman James Willard Schultz, (1859 to 1947). Schultz was a noted author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfoot Indians. While operating a fur trading post at Carroll, Montana and living amongst the Pikuni tribe during the period 1880-82, he was given the name "Apikuni" by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane. Schultz is most noted for his prolific stories about Blackfoot life and his contributions to the naming of prominent features in Glacier National Park. On the Warpath, by James Willard Schultz, is a unique and odd story of a white man's experiences while living among Indians as one of themselves. It has an extraordinarily intimate effect, as if it might be a translation from some tale written in an Indian dialect. As a story it contains many incidents that will thrill young readers. For older ones it will be valuable as a study of Indian mental and spiritual life. This book originally published by Houghton Mifflin in 1914 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

James Willard Schultz, Bryan R. Johnson

Paperback (Independently published, Dec. 10, 2016)
Thomas Fox and Pitamakan have no sooner returned from one adventure when they find themselves once again in the middle of danger. Enemies abound, not only war parties from other tribes but perhaps from within the Pikuni camp itself! Soon, the two friends find themselves riding into danger as they travel across the vast plains. It will take all of their skills and bravery to ensure that their new quests are successful as they go… on the warpath! Originally published in 1914, On the Warpath is the third in the series of novels by James Willard Schultz that features young Thomas Fox, nephew of the American Fur Company factor of Fort Benton, and his great Pikuni friend, Pitamakan. The year is 1863 and the prairies are swarming with war parties from enemy tribes. The two boys must travel far and fight hard to keep their scalps and count coups. James Willard Schultz (1859 – 1947) knew the Montana frontier well. Arriving at Fort Benton in Blackfeet territory in 1877, he married his beautiful Blackfeet wife, Natahki, and spent decades as a trader, rancher and hunting guide in what is now western Montana. He also spent his later life writing 47 books, many of them novels about his friends, the Blackfeet Indians, and other adventures of the Montana territory. This new digital edition of On the Warpath features a special introduction and footnotes by Bryan R. Johnson to provide detailed background on Blackfeet culture and history in this exciting tale of adventure set in the old West.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, May 8, 2017)
Excerpt from On the WarpathOn an average I hunted every third day; it was astonishing the amount of meat the employees and their Indian families consumed, although, of course, with the exception of wild berries and pommes Mamba, - an edible root found everywhere on the prairie in the spring, -meat was practically their only food. The day had not yet come when flour, bacon, beans, and sugar could be purchased in Fort Benton.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Sept. 10, 2015)
About the Book Military history texts discuss the historical record of armed conflict in the history of humanity, its impact on people, societies, and their cultures. Some fundamental subjects of military history study are the causes of war, its social and cultural foundations, military doctrines, logistics, leadership, technology, strategy, and tactics used, and how these have developed over time. Thematic divisions of military history may include: Ancient warfare, Medieval warfare, Gunpowder warfare, Industrial warfare, and Modern warfare. Also in this Book Military strategy texts present ideas for military organizations to achieve their desired strategic goals. Military strategy discusses the planning and conduct of campaigns, the movement and disposition of forces, and how to deceive the enemy. Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831), defined military strategy as "the employment of battles to gain the end of war." B. H. Liddell Hart defined strategy as "the art of distributing and applying military means to fulfill the ends of policy", which places more emphasis on political aims relative to military goals. Sun Tzu (544-496 BC) is the father of Eastern military strategy and greatly influenced Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese war tactics. His book The Art of War has been very popular and has seen practical implementation in Western societies. And in this Book Books on the military history of the United States span a period of more than two centuries, over which the United States evolved from a rebellious colony of Great Britain (the American War of Independence, 1775–1783), through the disastrous American Civil War (1861–1865), late but vital participation in World War 1 (1917-18), and a critical role in World War II (1941–1945), to the world's foremost superpower from the late 20th century to present. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
