  • The White Darkness: And Other Stories of the Great Northwest

    Lawrence Mott

    eBook (, May 9, 2015)
In “The White Darkness," by Lawrence Mott Heinemann, we have a welcome change from the ordinary novel. Mr. Mott evidently has a wide knowledge of the French-Canadian trappers and the Mounted Police. The stories depict the great hardships of their lives, yet through all there runs a vein of brightness and bonus camaraderie and of kindness to each other when in trouble. Some of the stories are full of pathos, as in that of “ Jaquette " and “ Light of “ a Match.” The story of Black Dan in "The Current of Fear” relates how a bully was punished, but there is more light than shadow in the tales. About the author: Jordan Lawrence Mott IV (1881–1931), was an American novelist and writer on the outdoor life. His published works include Jules of the Great Heart: “free” trapper and outlaw in the Hudson Bay region in the early days (1905), To the Credit of the Sea (1907),The White Darkness, and other stories of the Great North-West (1907), and Prairie, Snow and Sea (1910). He pioneered fishing for steelhead on the North Umpqua River, Oregon, and a bridge and a section of the North Umpqua Trail bear the name Mott in his memory. He established a fishing camp near Steamboat Creek. This book originally published by Outing Publishing Company in 1907 and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.
