  • Taking Charge on the Job: Techniques for Assertive Management

    Lyn Taetzsch

Hardcover (Executive Enterprises Pubns Co, June 1, 1978)
When people first meet someone, there usually open minded (unless they've been prepared beforehand on what to expect). They wait to see what the new person's style is. Each subsequent interaction with the person gives new information for the box: "that's the second time Jerry was late on an assignment. He's probably one of those guys who can't meet deadlines." The boxes are okay as long as there continually updated in a cord with new information. The problem occurs when people form the Box quickly, and then keep it static no matter what the person says or does in the future. When the person says something that doesn't fit his or her box, these people think: "that's not like Harry he must be out of sorts today." How often do you react to what you expect a person to say rather than to what he is actually saying? That's because of the Box you put him in. very often people are thrown into boxes without saying a word. They are pegged as a certain type because they are manager or worker; from accounting or production; male or female; black or white; old or young. This stereotyping leaves little room to hear what the person is actually saying.
