The Rivals of the Trail is from the "Campfire and Trail" series written by Lawrence J. Leslie in 1913. This series recounts the adventures of the "Outing Boys," a group of kids seeking adventure wherever they can find it. Even though it's almost a century old, today's kids love reading these stories. This kind of story is popular because kids can easily imagine themselves taking part. The activities might be "dangerous" by today's standards, but they are all within the realm of possibility.In an earlier adventure, the Outing Boys explored and found freshwater pearls, some of which proved valuable. With the proceeds from that discovery, they purchased motorcycles, which they use in this adventure to seek another fortune harvesting ginseng. They wander miles away from their parents, they ride their motorcycles without helmets, and there's no hint that they need licenses for their motorcycles. In short, they do all kinds of dangerous things that no responsible parent would allow these days. And that's why kids love these stories.
