The poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950) have been long admired for the lyric beauty that is especially characteristic of her early works. "Renascence," the first of her poems to bring her public acclaim, was written when she was nineteen. Now one of the best-known American poems, it is a fervent and moving account of spiritual rebirth. In 1917, "Renascence" was incorporated into her first volume of poetry, which is reprinted here, complete and unabridged, from the original edition. The 23 works in this first volume are fired with the romantic and independent spirit of youth that Edna St. Vincent Millay came to personify. In addition to "Renascence," this volume includes 16 other early lyric poems — "Interim," "Sorrow," "Ashes of Life," "Three Songs of Shattering," "The Dream," "When the Year Grows Old," and others, including six sonnets, to which Millay brought great distinction throughout her career.

The mother and three daughters then moved regularly, very poor, with one of their special pleasures being reading classic literature to each other. All three girls grew up quite bright, and Edna’s talent for poetry was known from a young age.In 1912, when Millay was only 20, she came in fourth in a poetry contest with her poem Renascence. Many felt she deserved first place for her entry. The name Renascence had been used by Walter Crane for his illustrated poetry book done in 1891. It might be that Millay knew of this book. The word refers to something which was once dormant becoming revived and alive.Edna went to Vassar and then moved to New York City. By the time 1917 came around, she had put together her very first book of poetry. This was published by Mitchell Kennerley. It was titled, in a straightforward way, Renascence and Other Poems. She was 25 years old. The book has 25 poems in it. Kismet! In 1920, at age 28, she published A Few Figs from Thistles, famous for its celebration of female sexuality. Millay’s skills continued to build. She wrote The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver in 1923 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry with it. She was 31.In this same year she married Eugen Jan Boissevain who was a great supporter of her writing. In 1943 she was awarded the Frost Medal for her poetry. Her husband died in 1949 of lung cancer. I am a photographer and carefully selected images from my own photographic library to illustrate each of Millay's poems. I also take formatting extremely seriously.
