Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) is one of America’s most read authors, and he is widely considered one of the premier authors of children’s books. Baum wrote dozens of novels and short stories, as well as hundreds of poems, and he even foresaw technological innovations such as computers, televisions and mobile phones, all of which made their way into his writing. Baum, however, is still best known and best regarded for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and several other titles that took place in the fantasy world of Oz. Every American is familiar with Dorothy and Toto, and Oz has been adapted for movies, screenplays, and more ever since. The 12th book in the series, The Tin Woodman of Oz follows the famous Tin Woodman and tells the story of his reunion with the Munchkin Nimmie, from back in the day when he was still flesh and blood. The story is part of a backstory from the first book of the series.

The servants of the Tin Woodman all wore tin helmets and tin breastplates and uniforms covered with tiny tin discs sewed closely together on silver cloth, so that their bodies sparkled as beautifully as did the tin castle—and almost as beautifully as did the Tin Woodman himself. Woot the Wanderer looked at the man servant—all bright and glittering—and at the magnificent castle—all bright and glittering—and as he looked his eyes grew big with wonder. For Woot was not very big and not very old and, wanderer though he was, this proved the most gorgeous sight that had ever met his boyish gaze. "Who lives here?" he asked.

The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow are visited by a young boy named Woot who learns that the Tin Woodman was once a man who loved a young girl of Oz. Inspired, the three of them set off to find the girl. This novel, the 12th in the Oz series, provides backstory for the original novel and reversed a trend of declining sales for the series, perhaps as a result of a desire for nostalgia amid the carnage of World War I.

This is the twelfth book in The Oz Series by L. Frank Baum. The Tin Woodman, whose real name is Nick Chopper, is unexpectedly reunited with the Munchkin Girl he had courted before he became a tin man. Sadly, she has a new love and no longer cares for him. As he attempts to regain her affection, Nick discovers a fellow tin man, Captain Fyter, as well as a Frankenstein monster-like creature, Chopfyt, made from their combined parts by the tinsmith, Ku-Klip.
