  • Grimms’ Fairy Stories

Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, John Gruelle, R. Emmett Owen, ICU Publishing, Edgar Taylor, Marian Edwardes

eBook (ICU Publishing, Dec. 27, 2010)
Grimms’ Fairy Stories, as it is commonly known today, is originally the Children’s and Household tales which is a collection of German origin fairy tales first published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers Grimm. The first volumes were much criticized because they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions – such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references, such as Rapunzel’s innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naively revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her step mother, but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. The book includes illustrations, active table of contents, and a free audiobook link for download (which can be downloaded separately using a PC/Mac) at the end of the book.

  • Grimm's Fairy Stories by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Fiction, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Legends & Mythology

Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, The Brothers Grimm

Hardcover (Wildside Press, Sept. 1, 2004)
From "Dummling and the Three Feathers": Once upon a time there lived a King who had three sons; the two elder were learned and bright, but the youngest said very little and appeared somewhat foolish, so he was always known as Dummling. When the King grew old and feeble, feeling that he was nearing his end, he wished to leave the crown to one of his three sons, but could not decide to which. He thereupon settled that they should travel, and that the one who could obtain the most splendid carpet should ascend the throne when he died.So that there could be no disagreement as to the way each one should go, the King conducted them to the courtyard of the Palace, and there blew three feathers, by turn, into the air, telling his sons to follow the course that the three feathers took. Then one of the feathers flew eastwards, another westwards, but the third went straight up towards the sky, though it only sped a short distance before falling to earth. Therefore one son traveled towards the east, and the second went to the west, both making fun of poor Dummling, who was obliged to stay where his feather had fallen. Then Dummling, sitting down and feeling rather miserable after his brothers had gone, looked about him, and noticed that near to where his feather lay was a trapdoor. On lifting this up he perceived a flight of steps, down which he went. At the bottom was another door, so he knocked upon it, and then heard a voice calling . . .

Wilhelm Grimm, Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm, Johnny Gruelle

Paperback (Dodo Press, Aug. 10, 2007)
Beautifully illustrated collection of the famous stories. The Brothers Grimm were Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, German professors who were best known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales, and for their work in linguistics, relating to how the sounds in words shift over time (Grimm's Law). They began collecting folk tales around 1807. They produced a manuscript collection of several dozen tales, which they had recorded by inviting storytellers to their home and transcribing what they heard. In 1812, they published a collection of 86 German fairy tales in a volume titled Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales). They published a second volume of 70 stories in 1814 ("1815" on the title page), which together make up the first edition of the collection, containing 156 stories.
