Squire Matthew Paxton does not want any more cats living on his farm but when he rescues a small ginger kitten from a large rat, he decides that he can be a present for his daughter, Matilda. She names the kitten Henry, after the King of England, Henry the eighth, because they both have "red hair" and are reputed to be brave and fearless. Henry grows into a large beautiful ginger cat who seems to constantly find himself in danger and even Matthew starts to boast about his adventures to the men who work on his farm. It is sometimes said that cats have nine lives because they so often narrowly escape disaster. Henry loses seven lives and on one of his escapades he even meets the King himself. After the farm house is set on fire it will be up to Henry to rescue the family and save the reputation of the young boy, who everyone believes is responsible for the disaster.
