  • THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER

    Mark Twain

    eBook
The Mysterious Stranger is set in late 1500's Austria. Twain became bitter and anti-religious in his later years, and this book reflects that trend. Thru various characters in the story, Twain offers up his opinions about the reason for life, deity, life after death, religious hypocrisy, etc. The other stories in this book are much more light hearted and reflect the more typical writings of the humorist, Twain.(non illustrated)

  • The Mysterious Stranger

Mark Twain, Luke Cardy, FrontPage Publishing

    Audible Audiobook (FrontPage Publishing, )
"The Mysterious Stranger" is Mark Twain's final novel. It was worked on periodically from roughly 1890 up until 1910. The body of work is a serious social commentary by Twain addressing his ideas of the Moral Sense and the "damned human race". The story tells of the adventures of Satan, the sinless nephew of the biblical Satan, in an Austrian village in the Middle Ages. Classic storytelling. A very interesting side of Twain's writings.

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 2, 2019)
Chapter I It was in 1590--winter. Austria was far away from the world, and asleep; it was still the Middle Ages in Austria, and promised to remain so forever. Some even set it away back centuries upon centuries and said that by the mental and spiritual clock it was still the Age of Belief in Austria. But they meant it as a compliment, not a slur, and it was so taken, and we were all proud of it. I remember it well, although I was only a boy; and I remember, too, the pleasure it gave me.
