  • The Book of Camping & Woodcraft: A Guidebook For Those Who Travel In The Wilderness

    Horace Kephart

    eBook
NOTE: This description is for the 2011 reprint with the green and black cover, NOT the 2012 reprint with the brown cover "published" by RareBooksClub.com. This 2011 edition is an EXACT reprint of the 1910 edition, and reproduces the original layout and illustrations perfectly. There IS NO gibberish or poorly OCR'd text in the one with the green and black cover.“Your thoroughbred camper likes not the attentions of a landlord, nor will he suffer himself to be rooted to the soil by cares of ownership or lease. It is not possession of the land, but of the landscape, that enjoys; and as for that, all the wild parts of the earth are his, by a title that carries with it no obligation but that he shall not desecrate nor lay them waste."H. KephartIntended as the definitive pocket field guide for the turn of the 20th Century woodsman and camper, the The Book of Camping & Woodcraft was originally published in 1906. This particular "Heritage Edition" appears as it was on the second reprinting in 1910. In 1916, Kephart dramatically expanded the book into two volumes to include wagon camping and semi-permanent base camp construction. These are the equivalent of modern car camping - just a couple of notches down from a motel stay. The 1910 edition is the "purest" of all the editions of "The Book of Camping and Woodcraft". Fully illustrated with photographs and diagrams and packed with woodcraft lore, this book is a must-have for any rugged outdoorsman or bushcraft or classic camping enthusiast.

  • The Book Of Camping And Woodcraft : A Guidebook For Those Who Travel In The Wilderness

    Horace KEPHART (1862 - 1931)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2017)
In the introductory part of Camping and Woodcraft, Horace Kephart stated that, "My one aim in writing this little book is to make it of practical service to those who seek rest or sport in the wilderness, or whose business calls them thither." The writer moreover defined the inclusions of this book, "In the following chapters I offer some suggestions on outfitting, making camps, dressing and keeping game and fish, camp cookery, forest travel, how to avoid getting lost, and what to do if one does get lost, living off the country, what the different species of trees are good for (from a camper's viewpoint), backwoods handicrafts in wood, bark, skins and other raw materials, the treatment of wounds and other injuries, and some other branches of woodcraft that may be of service when one is far from shops and from hired help." Horace Sowers Kephart was a travel writer and librarian, most popular as the writer of Our Southern Highlanders of his experiences in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina and the traditional outdoors reference book Camping and Woodcraft. Horace Sowers Kephart was born in East Salem, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Iowa. He was the director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library in St. Louis, Missouri between the years 1890 and 1903. During these times, Horace also drafted a guide book about camping and shooting jaunts. At an earlier time, Horace was also employed as a librarian at Yale University and spent some considerable time in Italy as a wage earner of a prestigious collector of books in the United States. He penned of his life experiences in a sequence of articles in the publication Field and Stream. These articles were gathered into his primary guide book, Camping and Woodcraft, which was first released in 1906.
  • The Book of Camping & Woodcraft: A Guidebook for Those Who Travel in the Wilderness

    Horace Kephart

Paperback (Martino Fine Books, March 17, 2016)
2016 Reprint of 1908 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This title continues to rank very high among the best sporting books of all time. A standard manual for campers and a veritable outdoor enthusiast's bible for over a century, the book reflects Horace Kephart's practical knowledge and covers, in depth, any problem that campers might confront. Kephart lived in the Great Smoky Mountains and spent most of his time in the wild. Consequently, he became an expert on all aspects of camp life from living in a semi-permanent lean-to to traveling with only the bare essentials in a backpack. More than simply a hunting or fishing guide, Kephart's book covers a wide variety of subjects from how to dress game and fish to how to shoot accurately. Every chapter is filled with tips that remain useful even after one hundred years of improvements in equipment and technology. "All Scouts know Horace Kephart," began a story in the April, 1914, Boys' Life magazine. "His Book of Camping and Woodcraft" is the pocket companion of pretty nearly everyone who likes to live in the open."

    Horace Kephart

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 14, 2015)

This is a photographic reproduction of the classic 1906 edition.

  • The Book of Camping and Woodcraft: A Guidebook for Those Who Travel in the Wilderness

    Horace Kephart

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 5, 2018)
Excerpt from The Book of Camping and Woodcraft: A Guidebook for Those Who Travel in the WildernessAs for camps situated within easy reach of towns or supply-posts, every one, I suppose, knows best how to gratify his own tastes in fitting them up, and prefers to use his own ingenuity rather than copy after others. Real woodcraft consists rather in knowing how to get along without the appliances of civilization than in adapting them to wildwood life. Such an art comes in play when we travel light, and especially in emergen cies, when the equipment, or essential parts of it, have been destroyed. I am not advising anybody to travel with nothing but a gun and ammunition, a blanket, a frying-pan, and a tin cup; but it has been part of my Object to show how the thing can be done, if necessary, Without serious hardship.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
