In the early years of the 20th century criminal activity thrived in the Midwest between Chicago and St Louis. Al Capone was a feared, powerful figure. When two young boys undertook the jobs of being runners, their lives changed dramatically. And later they traveled along with a Medicine Man, a fake healer of those who believed in his powers. As a young man, Joe lost his mother, and ended up an innocent fellow trying to find his way in life. But at only 13 years old his experience was minimal. Since this is predominently factual, it gives the reader an idea of life in those days. But because the author wasn't there, she gives readers the excitement without hearing those words and seeing the action. This was her father-in-law, a most remarkable man, as he related his life to her.
